CRITIQUE OMG PLEASE
Tell me ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that looks wrong, horrible, or even just slightly askew. I mean, I haven't gone into detail yet but before I do, is there anything that should change?
It's easier to see what is wrong when the picture isn't yours, I think. This is a project I'm doing for my brother. Which I've been working on for a few months on and off. But I get horribly frustrated every time I draw because it's just so different than what I usually do. He will eventually be all decked out in armor and the sword will be much cooler. Plus he'll have a face.
I can never seem to work on this picture for more than an hour before I erase it in RAAGE but this time I'm just keeping the same picture, editing it as I go. I think that's better.

A trick that works for me (and everyone else I've mentioned it to) is to take the page you drew on -- or I guess in your case, print it out first -- and look at it reversed in a mirror, or against a light source. Something about flipping it like that makes flaws you didn't even notice quite, er, noticeable. :P
But, since you asked... The pelvis seems a bit too wide and short, and that line for the back should be pulled in a bit at the top... Also, something I notice that I myself do all the time is that the far shoulder should be behind the torso, not coming around to the front; or else the torso should be twisted accordingly if that shoulder is indeed turned forward.
All your other proportions seem spot on. :3

Thanks a lot for the imput! And well, since it's digital I can just flip the image, but I didn't think of that.
Hmmm, I see what you mean about the pelvis and the shoulder! I was trying to put the shoulder in a way so it looks like it's behind the torso, but I don't think it's back enough.

WELL I TRIED but then I realized I wasn't too good at legs. and arms. and hands. But I think the global proportions are more or less fixed like this.

draw the sucker again. seriously.
if you're spending an hour working just on this pose? stuff it, draw it again from scratch. And if looks bad? draw it again from scratch.
though this sketch?
As people have already said, the arms are too short. If he lets his arms hang down, the hands would be just below his hips.
THe thighs are slightly too long compared to the shins. Not by a lot, but they are.
The feet are small compared to the proportions of his body. And the proportions lend themselves to a really tall person. and tall people tend to have big feet. This isnt by far an anatomical rule, but, its a pretty good generalisation. Same with the hands, they do tend to be at least longer, on tall people.
His back goes down to his butt in a pretty even line. If this person were real, he'd have a giant hunchback and probably be some sort of carnival monster. the latissimus dorsi muscles need to be further defined, especially seeing how tank the rest of him is. That one is the muscles that are under yer armpit! yessah.
on the right arm connecting into the shoulder, the lower part of the arm connects to the same part as the top, when the lower part of the arm connects more into the side of the chest. sorta, kinda. like, it doesnt just poke out like that, the best i could say is to get reference for that.
His neck looks about twice as big as his wrists.

If hes drawing the sword, then i don't know how hes intending to draw it. It seems like its meant to be taken from japanese sword fighting, as though its a strike to be dealt from the sword sheath. however from the angle hes holding the sword, and how high hes holding it, and the angle of the arm holding the hilt, the blade will have very little strength behind it when it would connect. you'll find that when the followers of bushido use that method of striking, their stance is low and powerful, and the sword held low at the hips, to provide a better angle of attack, and to give the drawing arm greater leverage and power when drawing.

is a pretty good explination, and might provide a good source point to researching pose an stuff.

i remember the stances this guy had in the game soul calibre 2 were really friggin cool, and he had a iaijutsu stance, which was plan ol neat. If you can find screen shots, or just play the game, then you'll get +10 to understanding.
OK SORRY For the long reply. hope its somehow helpful, and srsly, just redraw the sucker. works almost every time.

Thanks very much for the long comment, and YES I WILL draw it again! It's not nearly dynamic enough!

I'm bad with proportion, and I usually forget the rules of it! I should study it more.
For the back thing I have no idea what you're talking about. It looks kinda wrong to me, but what you said about it just doesn't compute in my brain for some reason. But if I study anatomy more maybe I can find out.
Are you saying his neck is too thick or too thin?
And I know totally NOTHING about swords and how to hold them, so this is good info I think. The characer is supposed to be drawing the sword from the sheath that's hanging from his belt.

Hmm I always find it hard to get input on anatomy for others, I find Im my own worst critic a lot too, unless it is really obvious but sometimes I just want to get something finished so I leave it anyway. Well take into consideration that if it is for your brother, I think he will be pleased no matter what.
Now after saying all that, I think the line down the chest and abbs could be moved over, just a hair though.

I always found that when I'm working stuff out on a sketch that it helps a lot to just do another one, changing stuff as I do. But that's me, everyone works differently.
The neck seems a little short and thin. I think it wouldn't hurt to thicken it just a tiiiiny bit. His torso is too short, lengthen just a little bit too. Also, the pose is a little bland, sorry to say. I think if you bent his knees some more and spread his legs some it would help. Adding some twist the body would be pretty cool too. I would think that if he's drawing a sword like that that his shoulders would be rotated about 30- 45 degrees or summat... Hope this helps. ^^;

Well, everyone has already critiqued the hell out of this, but I'll offer my inital impression anyway; the torso is disproportionate to the legs. Making the legs shorter might synch up with the rest of the image, in that the hands come mid-thigh, etc. I also get the impression that you may have buried the head/neck slightly into the torso, due to space constaint.
And as always, you can also be your own reference material. Though there are plenty of other resources online...
