The Rat Formerly Known As Dinner
This is Inari, a rat I saved off of craigslist from this ad:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.....ets/dinner.jpg
I took one look at that pic in the ad and went: "Holy cow. That is a gorgeous Siamese." I responded to the ad, picked her up and got her into quarantine at a friend's house as I have a colony of 9 at home including 3 fosters from the local rescue.
She's downright gorgeous--I've never seen a female with such dark markings. She's stunning in person, very striking. Her tail is as black as my black boys, and her ears are almost there as well. She has light ruby eyes (they're a little darker in the pic than in RL) but aside from the dark tail base and dorsal stripe, she's a pristine snowy white. She's tiny for her age-smallest I've seen a full-grown rat who wasn't a dwarf--I suspect she may have had a litter very young.
She's on the shy side, but not a biter. She bit the families 7 year-old son, but I could guess why. She's seen the inside of a snake tank more than once too. Very lucky girl. With a little bit of work I think she'll be a fantastic pet.
She's up for adoption currently, if you are in the Western MA area. I took her in to personally foster, as I figured with those looks she could easily find a home. I love to rescue the ones with little chance (heck, I was the one that started the PEW awareness movement) but the unfortunate truth is that when it comes to adopting out rescues, looks matter, and I am no longer in a position to personally take in a wide array of rats and keep them forever. I try to do what I can, and this girl was going nowhere good fast. If she doesn't find a home soon, I might get attached and end up keeping her, as I think she'll make a good companion for one of my neutered boys who needs to be with someone who won't bully him out of food. MRR said they are willing to sponsor her, so I might try to go through them and get her spayed.
Shameless plug:

I love rats, I've been rescuing as a hobby for a few years now and it really makes me happy to see a rat in a bad situation given a second chance.
Rescuing is the best way to get 'em, they turn up on craigslist frequently, and there's a formal rescue in almost every state if you're in the US and country if you're not. A search on Petfinder reveals many near by. Their vet bills can be very high though, so if you ever do decide to get a pair (they don't do so well solo) then I recommend saving up a little on the side for a vet fund first--they usually don't get sick often, but when they are sick, they generally need a vet immediately.

Better for everyone that they don't breed, the rats included! I have several stories on my own of the terrible conditions I've rescued such "excess" rats from. That said, you could always neuter a male--I have a mix of both that way myself. I really feel, having had all 3, neutered males make the best snuggle pets. I haven't had a spayed female yet though, so maybe that would change my mind.
Thanks! She shouldn't need luck with those looks, such a pretty girl! Siamese are very much in my top 3 favorite rat colors.
Yea, it made me sad. The people actually were...a little nutty, but I wouldn't call them terrible people. Just a very different attitude. I live in a very agricultural area, and as the woman said "We believe in being practical about food chains." I'm just happy I could save one rat from that fate. I'm really not a fan of live-feeding (for various reasons).

You're right, if I was in your area and was allowed to have a Rat I'd want to adopt her myself, she's just so pretty ;~;
I totally have to agree with you on that, it makes me sad even to think about feeding them already-dead-meals and live-feeding would just consist of me running out of the room crying; my boyfriend insists that he'd do it instead. But it's why I'll probably never have a large snake, even though I'd love to.
Again, beautiful Rat and I'm glad you saved her :]

Thanks! I do love rats, she is my 7th personal rescue, if you don't count the adoptions and fosters from MRR. I became a rescuer by fate--didn't even want a rat! I thought they bit a lot. I just can't stand to see a creature go to someone I know will abuse it, so i stepped in. I ended up loving her dearly, getting her friends, and then I was hooked. THe saddest part about rescue though, is that depending on how you do it, they are often older which in an animal with such a short lifespan you don't get to spend as much time with them =/. All the ones from my first group died within a year a half, I was quite sad.
They're still ruby but they are very dark, much darker than normal. Otherwise she's actually a normal Siamese with very distinct markings--I was very surprised the first time i saw her. The lighting in the pic was a little blue, the markings are the normal brownish-black.
