On the final day, Matt lifted up a piece of wood as he always did and carved in the last hole. The raptor had always been confused by the action. The young man looked over the holes.
“Fourteen...” he sighed. Their two-week vacation was over. The raptor could sense in his rider's voice and see in his posture that something was off.
"Hard to believe it's been two weeks already..." he said. He then opened the knot of the leather strap around his neck and held the pendant between his fingers, pointing it towards his mount.
"It's time for me to change you back now, hold still...." He spoke with a sad undertone.
The dinosaur whimpered, stepping from one foot onto the other as he heard these words. He knew the pendant’s purpose, after all. Of course, he didn’t want to change back. Brief flashes of human memories surfaced, showing him what he’d have to go back to. There’d be no more raptor for now, no more running around freely, feeling the wind run in his feathers, and the grass brushing against his legs when he ran. No more feeling his rider's weight on his back.
The dinosaur acted on pure instinct, roaring out in frustration and sadness. He swatted the pendant from his rider's hand and made sure to use the side of his paw as to not hurt him. Nevertheless, this was truly the first time he had disobeyed his rider. He thought of this as an exception, as he didn't want to lose his rider. He simply didn't want it his form to revert.
"Hehe....you really don’t want to change back, do you?" Matt asked, looking up into those big, golden, sad eyes. The human rider understood him too well. What they experienced these past two weeks had been like a fairy tale. The riding, hunting, exploring, and just living a primal life with one another. Rarely ever before had they both felt so happy and alive.
The dino knew he could just run away and he would stay a raptor, but then he wouldn’t feel whole. He would be a raptor mount without a rider, and he needed a rider. A raptor without a rider was nothing, he thought, so he knew he couldn’t run away. But, he still would beg, whine, and give his rider sad looks to try his very best to convince his rider not to let their adventure end.
The raptor circled his rider slowly, nuzzling and rubbing his big snout against him. Soft dino-kisses were placed here and there, followed by licks over various places that his rider enjoyed so much. He did all his simple dinosaur mind could muster to make his rider change his mind.
"Well, I don't think a few more days will hurt, do you?" Matt finally said after a long pause, a soft smile washing over his face.
"Hurrr…rrrrrr…rrrrrrrrr!" The dinosaur thrummed deeply as he heard this. Despite not really understanding the words, the smile that his rider had was all too clear. More happy days, he thought, more days as a raptor running freely with no worries.
He nearly pounced his rider to the ground as he stepped closer, embracing him with his strong arms, pressing him gently against his chest. Matt could feel his entire body vibrate as Alex kept on humming and thrumming happily as he hugged the big dinosaur back, smiling softly.
Both knew that even these additional days would come to an end. That they would have to eventually go back.
But not today.
Not now.
Not here.
Matt finally pulled away from the embrace and pulled himself up into the saddle. Without saying a single word he took the reins, tugging softly at the left before he pressed his heels tenderly into his mount's flanks.
The dinosaur ran in response, running faster than he ever did before. He ran as fast as he could, as if he could outrun time itself. He wanted to outrun those pestering, worrying thoughts, and they melted away like hot butter when Matt leaned down, and petted his long neck. He whispered only soft words of encouragement as the dinosaur ran freely.
The golden raptor simply replied to those words with a warble as he continued dashing forward, eager to spend another happy day with his rider.
As I said before, I can barely put into words how much I adore this comic. So, once again, thank you thank you thank you
Altered for creating this tender and lovely comic. It always brings so much joy to my heart looking at it. And I also want to mention
Adume here, a very dear friend of mine, that helped me edit the story quite a bit to keep a more natural flow, as I fully admit, my writing at times can still sound rough and all.
So, thank you all that helped contribute to this amazing thing here. Thank you so much.
