This is another illustration from my upcoming novel "Wolf Boy" written by me and illustrated by Russell Tuller. I love this illustration as it helps explore how an everyday activity such as drinking becomes altered when someone is transformed. Exploring these minuscule alterations in an individual's life is one of the many aspects that fascinates me about transformation writing.
Story Excerpt:
I first grabbed my water container and went to investigate the simple rainwater collection system I had built the previous day after returning to camp with Starlight. It consisted of a large, circular pit dug out of the ground by Starlight and me with a raised bank all around to prevent any run off from the ground sliding in. The hole was then covered by a plastic tarp I had brought with me and anchored securely with rocks. Digging the pit itself was easy work with the ground already softened by the rain in combination with my strong, blunt claws aiding me when I dug.
I was delighted to see a sizeable pool of clear rainwater sitting motionlessly within our setup, and I crouched down low with my water container to fill it up. I stopped before disturbing the surface of the water and gazed pensively at the reflection staring back at me. The face looking back at me seemed so alien and different, but it only took a gentle touch to confirm that it was indeed my own.
I've changed so much in so little time.
Starlight came up beside me and lifted his head up to reassuringly brush his nose behind one of my ears and growl tenderly deep in his throat, making me smile and causing my tail to wiggle. He had a gift of sensing and immediately addressing any changes in my emotional state. Starlight only needed to watch how I carried myself as I walked, how my tail and ears were moving, and listen to the pace of my breathing to piece together my inner thoughts and feelings. The subtleties of my body language were like open books to him, and he often understood what I was working through without a single word needing to be exchanged.
I looked at my reflection again and swiftly lowered my water container, scattering my image on the water's surface into diverging ripples as I filled my container to the brim before lifting it out. I fastened the top closed with a few quick twists, and then watched Starlight lower his face to the pooled water and start lapping at it. I bent over to join him, and as I drank my fill, I noticed a new result of my changes from last night. Without thinking about it, I was lapping at the water just like Starlight was. Each time I went for a new gulp of water, my tongue reached out past my lips, feeling longer than before in proportion to my small muzzle. My tongue folded at the tip to form a small scoop before pulling water back into my throat in a quick, fluid motion. Starlight paused to watch me for a moment, but nonchalantly resumed lapping at the fresh rainwater in front of us.
