A Helping Hand - Page 2
Page 2! Aka: Blue's getting some ideas...
So in case it wasn't already obvious, that journal I did a while back about species was for this comic thingy, and I ended up going with deer because it seemed a surprisingly popular vote, but there were a few other species that popped up more than I expected, so this 'flashback' panel was a good place to throw them in. Bird and Bat were both voted way more than I would have expected.
...the cat was just me picking something random, though.
Some random thoughts- I don't know much about comic convention so for the flashback I just sorta dulled out the colours a bit, I hope it's relatively clear what's going on there.
I have some ideas on how to tidy up my writing, though I've drawn a few pages ahead at this point so it's going to continue to look like a mess for a little while. Please bear with me, I'll keep trying to clean that up. I'm also still figuring out how to best do simplified colouring, hopefully that will improve over time as well!
I decided to stick with the mostly white background for now simply for consistency's sake, but I'm not a huge fan- when the comic changes locations in a few pages I'll try out some different stuff for the BG and see how that goes.
I'm getting fairly comfortable with the blue fellow, but I'm still working out how to draw deer guy. Another thing to hopefully improve with time!
Anyway! This is an experiment, very much a learning process- I'm dipping my toes into comics to see what the water is like. If you like what you're seeing so far and would like to help me continue making it, and hopefully improve it, consider checking out my Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/ruaidri
It's also a great way to show me that you're interested in this kind of content, instead of just simple mindless smut. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, I'm a pretty big fan myself...)
Even a dollar really does help out a lot, and for that amount you'll get to see the pages as I finish them, as well as vote on a monthly Patreon supported painting every month, see that picture a month ahead of everyone here, and get access to the occasional Patreon only YCH.
But as always, the finished thing will be tossed up here in it's entirety for free, so if that ain't your style, no worries! I'm not interested in creating a paywall.

You're all about expressions, and comics are about being expressive, so you have that major part down. The rest is just practice at mechanics.
Now, this said, please revisit that bat!! She's way too cute not to see more of. ...brain now wants bat bird and kitty taking out frustrations of not sharing the deer together. That's "together" for both sharing the deer and sharing frustrations. *giggle* (i.e. lots of toys involved)

If you get a small old program by Corel called "Corel Essentials"; the first one, it is about thirty dollars to buy it and you'd need to tell your current Microsoft OS what version it should use to run the program with. Anyway, it allows you to use any picture like a photograph then 'adjust' it to be like your style for backgrounds. Then just place your foreground people on that picture using Photoshop or CorelDRAW, even Painter. On later versions of "Essentials", they took out that feature. My current version does not have it.
This will 'speed up' your output and take the problem of white backgrounds away. (You can use your own photographs uploaded to a computer off your phone from any Starbucks' or another cafe'). ((Oh, Fluttershy photos are worthless because they have those crisscross watermarks on the stock photos, use generic ones on any image dump on google, I know how to use the "J" command or the stamp tool to remove watermarks in Photoshop, but the process is tedious, still it allows you to use stock textures from a site called https://www.textures.com then use the Stamptool to copy what you want for a background, using the filters (like noise and radial blur) and a general knowledge of Photoshop 'Tricks' is what I use to speed up creation of backgrounds that don't really exist; it also prevents plagurism)).
Also using a monster library of Fonts someplace online I think, you can then use the "Type" icon in photoshop to do all your captions and dialogue. (even the word balloons, little stroke arrows like a "V" shape elongated put on the bottom will perfect your dialogue pointer to the one person speaking.
If you are going to stay with white backgrounds consider using a black or dark gray page to put the panels on, the contrast will change the 'look' of the panels.

This is all very solid advice, but I am a stubborn traditional-only artist. To be honest I kind of enjoy the challenge of figuring out how to do these things on paper, even if it is a bit slower. I just never found digital drawing to be as fun so I stick to watercolours, even if it is potentially against my best interests! :P
You can tell it's a flashback because his antlers are smaller, hah. Nicely done. Even aside from that, it was pretty clear to me that it was a flashback--not sure if it was the reduced saturation or just context, but there was no confusion.
And your handwriting is fine. Not saying you shouldn't continue with whatever efforts you have planned in that regard, but there's really no issue with legibility as it is.

Even if you're learning as you go, you're still turning out a pretty pleasing result. Having the flash-background with the two characters talking over it in the present was excellent economy of space, and made it instantly clear what was going on. I like the direction that the plot is headed to. Yeah, it seems like you're setting up the two of them for some fun, but you're doing it in a very thoughtful, relatable way. I love it when there's that kind of personal connection to be found in a more developed narrative like a comic or sequence.
Hey, thanks man! I'll admit the plot is going to be a bit rushed, I can't really afford to spend a few months making things feel all natural, but I'm trying my best make things as reasonable as I can within a few pages. It's definitely going to be a bit goofy because of how fast things happen but hopefully not too unpleasant. :P
As someone who regularly takes forever to get to the point in my stories, I can say from experience that very few people will be upset to find that you're moving right along. Especially in a fairly compressed narrative format like a comic. Don't fret too much about setting up all the dominoes. I already appreciate the effort that you've put into the plot.
