Oh no, well-meaning extremists! The only thing worse are the ill-meaning ones. Plus an unexplained nuclear explosion wiping out Moscow would have escalated things because Russia would have only the USA to blame for it since only they had demonstrated a bomb and being an unprovoked attack on an ally would have generated a very hot war for the US and likely brought in other countries.
