That spider monkey on the right is a very special person to Nokemy. Back in his home village Michael Irving was the local weapons master and one quite revered at that. He was also the young monkey's father.

Of course. His father is a renowned weapons master. He has been training him since he could walk pretty much. The weapon in his hand is his favorite so he gets the most training in with that. And when his dad isn't training him in combat his mother was teaching him in other things. Of course she could fight too and there were a few times she would show him techniques that his father did not know. But in that battle at the village Nokemy couldn't do very much since he was still young and quite small, so when most were all were killed or captured he was in the group brought in for slavery and experimentation.
