Been seeing allot of duck art lately, and its been stirring feelings about the loss of my most beloved pet puddles.
Some may remember around 2 years ago a large journal I wrote on my loss of Puddles and barbs, my two remaining ducks.
Puddles here was my first ever pet, and my long companion of almost 11 years. He was harness trained, went on outings with me, and swimming with my friends and I. This photo was from 07 when we drove him down to a large local river and he came swimming with some friends and I, other people loved him haha.
Puddles and his companion barbs were snatched away from us October 19th 2007 by a fox, that day still haunts me.
RIP Puddles and barbs, I love you.
For anyone considering getting a pet duck, I highly suggest it. They are as loyal and loving as any dog, and will give you years of loving company, if you raise and train them correctly.
Puddles was "house trained" for a large step of his life, but if you consider this road, I suggest looking into the type of harnesses that you can get for them, as ducks cant be "potty trained" like cats and dogs.
I do plan to get a new duck, as above all other critters, they are my favorite overall. Ive just been waiting a while, till I feel its right.

Fun fact : Puddles in his 5th year entered a dog obedience competition at a local fair, and won blue ribbons at all But the jumping obstacle. He could sit, stay, speak, come, could point out different colours for you if you lined them out before you, the list goes on. He was entering against about 50 dogs of all breeds XD
But yes, his harness was a rabbit one that I modified,I used to take him for walks all the time until he was around 8 (he had a family of other ducks I got by then, so he didn't like to leave them for long). For keeping in doors, people actually make and sell special duck harnesses now with a special pocket under their tail to catch well..yea lol. Ducks cant control when they go, so if you wish to keep one indoors allot, you have to be dedicated to cleaning their harness often for them.

Ducks can be trained with treats like most dogs. Puddles treat was grapes, he loved them, but bread or meal worms work wonders too. From 3 days old till he was one, he could actually go to a litter box, but after a few accidents (if he didn't make it in time he just had to go), I applied a harness with a pouch that caught anything. (I think they sell them now as "ducky diapers" haha). But Not long after I rescued a female duck for a companion, and we built a rather large house for them outside :).
I love foxes, but I must admit (especially here in Australia) I cant help but loath them for what happened as well (alas nature XD). The sad truth is, the ducks were usually in no danger, they were living back at my parents for a while, because the new home I had moved into just down the street needed the yard fixing before they could live there.
I was paying my sisters to let them out and put them back in every evening. And they forgot that one night, and a fox happened to visit. Puddles was gone, though I went a bit hysteric looking for him, even though I knew he was gone, and barbs was wounded beyond saving. I had to take her to the vet that morning to have her put down ;_;
Sorry about your rooster, they can be lovely pets as well, I had 3 chickens and a goose at one stage as well, all almost as tame and trained as puddles <3

As far as foxes in the wild are, I'm not too fond. 'Domesticated' foxes are fine, destructive as hell, but fine. I have had too many farm casualties and property damage situations with foxes to really like them that much. A few have won me over but most I'd rather not have around. I've had to trap them before because of how aggressive they were, attacking people and pets etc even without rabies.
So I know what you mean :/
But really that is incredibly sad and I hope that when you get another duck they will bring you just as much joy, of course they will never replace Puddles and Barbs but it may help to cope after awhile.
Yess I love all birds they are some of my favorite critters out there <3 and the training with Puddles is adorable I must say.

He's actually wearing a general one in this photo haha, feathers are covering most (It has a strap that goes under the breast, and one that is under the tail, and they join up on his back between the wings) . If you scroll up these comments I linked to a indoor one that's supplied though :)
I used to raise ducks and geese from eggs with my mother and sister. :) she bought a few of each one year and they started laying eggs so we decided to hatch them. they are very loving ^^
ill never forget one year we had a group of about 20 hatch, and i would sit in the yard then they would all fight over my lap.

Although when I read about you wanting another, this song sprang immediately to mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r1ncQbHbv8 *is shot*
