Good evening to you!
Okay, so, as many of you are aware, the long-running series "Adventure Time" will soon be ending it's run (Visual aid- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiaRLkczxSQ). After a good Ten seasons of fun and fantasy, following the adventures of Finn, The Human Boy and his adoptive brother Jake, The Dog through all their growth, change, triumphs and tragedies, Cartoon Network is letting them go. For many people this is a heart-wrenching good-bye. The program has been hailed by many as one of the last of a "renaissance period" in animation for CN, among such shows as "The Amazing World of Gumball", "Regular Show" and "Steven Universe".
Watching the show progress from a fairly unremarkable simple fantasy/humour series to a surprisingly deep tale of a post-holocaust world of intrigue and metaphor with writing that is occasionally FAR sharper than it's audience or it's detractors, I'm on board with all that.
Though another point does infuriate me about seeing the show take up it's hat. Many fans of all stripes of entertainment engage in something I've learned is called "Shipping" in which two characters become a couple in the popular mythos of the show in question. Whether they are actually romantically involved or not, some people enjoy the idea of them being so, for whatever reason. They write fan-fiction, draw artwork *head tilts, grins* make some porn and so on. "Sherlock/Watson"(Sherlock), "Keith/Lance"(The New Voltron) ...you get the idea. Some fans early on in the show's run began "shipping" the pair of the bright pink candy-elemental with control issues Princess Bubblegum and the dark, sassy, troubled free-spirit Marceline The Vampire Queen. The funny thing was, they were actually right to do so.
From the beginning the two were created to have a backstory involving romance and a strong bond of affection that has continued for centuries, attracted and driven apart by both The Princess' authority issues and responsibilities and Marceline's wild-horse in a pen demand for freedom.
So why the need for "shipping" them if they're actually a couple, You may be asking?
Well, that would be that despite what many propagandists might try to sell you, LGBTQ people are still a very marginalized group in America -and in other countries, even worse. Though the show's creators have expressed in multiple interviews their desire to make these episodes, Cartoon Network has repeatedly denied them the freedom to do so. Although it's acceptable for Finn, the show's protagonist, to have heterosexual attractions to multiple female characters and for his brother Jake to carry his relationship with Lady Rainicorn (an inter-species coupling, even) through to having puppies, a gay couple is considered inappropriate for "family viewing". Thus, the characters have only been able to hint at a past relationship and any present emotional or physical attraction they have for each other. When confronted on the topic, CN representatives have defended their action, as such people often do, by declaring it a necessary step for 'business' reasons. Due to the religious elements in several other countries(and this one) CN fears that if they were to allow the writers to produce the show as it's supposed to be with the couple openly established that these countries and their broadcasting networks would ban the show. "It's not us doing it. No, it's those guys. Blame them".
SO.... *huffs, smiles* ..to both Cartoon Network and every other person involved in such endeavors at misdirection and maintaining the status quo I say this....
If THEY don't like it, let THEM watch something else.... or to be more concise-
FUCK "them".
Seriously, FUCK 'em.... *shrugs, eyes blazing* Adventure Time has remained a popular draw across the world for Ten Years now and it's been proven that if money's to be made, the unscrupulous greedy will find a work-around. Numerous other shows appear in multiple countries with elements censored out for the same reasons. From networks in Russia putting a beard on one of the female characters in Steven Universe to cover up a gay-coded relationship to our own country writing out the romantic couple of Sailor Moon's Urnaus and Neptune, or even just not showing episodes deemed "inappropriate", it's a well-established practice.
*sneers in disgust* ...and yet, all the while, I keep hearing that old gong of "free speech" in the back of my head... and nobody seems to be banging it in outrage.
It's the last inning of the game, Cartoon Network, time to put up or shut up. *laughs* What the fuck are they gonna do, cancel the show? It's the series finale. Have at it.
And to us all, from the"South Park philosophers" to the genuinely informed- We need to decide what we believe in and stand up for it. Do we really believe in "free speech" or do we just like the idea? *snofts* The proof says the latter. Me, I just want to see people stop treating the free expression of love as if it's something they have a right to condemn on no authority but their own opinion. *blows a kiss* I love you guys. Love each other, eh?

Pretending like something doesn't exist doesn't make it go away. Not the fact that people will live their own lives regardless of what you think or want others to think, not the fact that LGBT individuals and their relationships occur across the whole globe, and certainly not the fact that when all is said and done, at the end of the road is a hole in the ground with a stone that has our name carved into it. These are cold hard truths. And while the truth may be a very bitter pill to swallow, it's because it's the best cure for ignorance and indifference. So to the people who can't tolerate the idea of two fiction (as in NOT EVEN REAL IN THE FIRST PLACE) characters having a same sex relationship, I say this. Just man up, woman up, or do whatever you gotta do to gulp that sucker down and accept reality. Seriously, you'll feel much better and start to appreciate life much more if you do.
You do have a way with words, love. Have you considered that oration may be your calling...?
You've stated, using good grammar and punctuation I might add, thank you dearly for that, exactly what I'm getting at.
Also- why Steven Crowder can "eat a fat dick" as the kids say.
People who don't like the idea of homosexuality or just relationships they consider "abnormal"/"inappropriate" etc. have the right to feel that way. That much is even in our constitution. However, it doesn't give them the right to harass, bully, intimidate or mistreat others. I may not care for their thinking either. I may(and do) see it as backwards, self-limiting, idiotic twaddle based in cultural nonsense shaped by superstition, fear and jealousy... and something to pity, really.... but I'm not going to go on their Facebook and say how disgusting I think they are. *shrugs* Not for that, anyways.
As I said in another recent post- if they ever decide to get the stick out of their ass and join the party, good on them. I'll be glad to see 'em there. It's their place in history.

I think I understand what you're trying to say, love. And it is indeed VERY sad to see.
Which is precisely why this manner of cowardice needs to stop. If we continue to shape the world for young people that their love is something which should be hidden and they ashamed of, we're some pretty terrible role models, raising some messed up people. I'm pretty sick of seeing young people, old people, any people, have to be afraid to "come out" about what they are, even in a fictional sense. I know that social change takes time and that is unfortunate but this has been far too long in coming.
I'm always ready to respect that someone has different views than my own, insolong as their views do not impede upon anyone else. Or, as The Satanic Temple puts it-
"We must respect the freedom of others including the freedom to offend. To encroach upon the freedom of another is to surrender your own".

Despise localised editing that try's to just alter characters like this. I remember beast wars fondly from my childhood, then did some digging and found airazor was changed to be male in japan. Thought it was an odd choice since there's clearly female characters in the show, seemed pointless, but then they heavily changed interactions between another character she was involved with, because how could they possibly show alien robots that were also gay, even though that last one was due to their own edits. Still can't quite follow the logic there.
A side note of sexuality and orientation, I don't understand the point of editing and adaptation of something for an audience that the editor thinks would be "unsuitable" for them, the audience is bound to find the original. Like 4kids edits of shows, if they need to be changed so much why bother? In more recut times, editing of Steven universe...whole barrel on the topic of localised editing. If they find the original content objectionable to the point that they should change scenes and edit characters, it baffles me that choose to adapt it in the first place. I suppose a pay cheque would answer all these questions if I'm being cynical.

Sadly, love, I believe your cynicism is right smack on the bean.
As with most anything, when there's money to be made, somebody will attempt to seize the opportunity, even if it demands sacrificing integrity, dignity or ethics. Sailor Moon came stateside back in the early 90's riding a HUGE wave of popularity in Japan.
It did so with SO much censoring and localization it's ridiculous, I recall that very well. From the cutting out of the deaths and lover's suicide in the first episode to much lesser-known fare, such as the scenes of Usagi skipping breakfast to get to school on time being removed for fear of promoting anorexia in young-uns.. aging characters up a few years to compensate for the differences in US child-sexuality laws Vs Japan's, changing the names of foodstuffs, there was cash to be grabbed and it would be grabbed no matter the cutting room cost.
These other countries are little different. *shrugs, chuckling* See, everybody? We're so much more alike than you all may have thought! Yay for repression and greed! *thumbs up*

All this talk of shows got me nostalgic for my childhood programming so decided to de a sweep of Google and YouTube. And there go my rose tinted glasses. I only watched Card Captor Sakura spottily, telling myself I could get what I missed from the episodes I was watching, but now I realise how much went on in the English adaptation. They did it a great disservice. Every gay relationship written off as a close freindship just strips another layer of depth from the show. Nothing wrong with platonic love, but it completely changes the motivations and perspectives of the characters in some cases. I'm surprised they thought it was less objectionable to have an adult teacher marry his 16 year old student than it was to show two grown men in love. The series seems to put emphasis on mutual love and respect, understanding those around you and supporting those that mean a lot to you. I suppose the English dub tries to convey this, but it's clear the people involved in the adaptation wanted to slip in the message "love is beautiful, but only the "right" love"...ugh, it's depressing how people go out of their way to treat a non-straight relationship as being automatically mature and not suitable for children to know about. A gay characters relationship isn't automatically sexual, can be as vanilla as anydood. What are they supposed to do, just discover something other than straight relationships exist years down the line and deem it "not normal"?....my heads going to go in circles about this show today, it could have been so much more than it was for when I was growing up, now it's just sign that people were trying to tell me what to think when I was a child. Ho hum.
Never did get into Adventure Time. I kept meaning to, but for whatever reason I kept losing interest too.
At least Steven Universe is pretty good, and I really enjoyed Gravity Falls too. Seems like every other year cartoons get better lately...
... well except for Mighty Magiswords. I mean seriously, talking non-stop at top speed in a way that makes me think either the fast forward button is stuck or the voice actors did a kilo of blow each before starting.

Well, I know I finally was talked into it by both spouses and Jami in a combined effort. the first season or so was fairly decent. Nothing really pulled me in besides the general affability of the characters and unusual art style.
However, by the time we get into the Season Two backstory of Simon.... OH SHIT.... I was hooked from that point on in a whole new way. The themes and elements of storytelling at play have been uplifting, heart-breaking and at times genuinely uncomfortable to watch. I highly recommend slogging through the "finding its footing" first season or so and getting to the great stuff.
Steven is a household hero, love. *beams* Jami's Rose Quartz flag hangs in the window and a lovely bit of art he picked up of the crystal gems(plus Lapis) resides in a frame near my tableau of The Seven Tenets. I haven't gotten into Gravity falls as yet due to time constraints but we've talked about it time and again.
Your description of this "Magiswords" show reminds me of my opinion on Excel: Saga....

Excel Saga is better. Mighty Magiswords is just... I'm not sure who the hell its for.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbP3YoXmmkc Yeah, didn't care for it. Its like they never pause for anything and the show has no pacing whatsoever. I just found it irritating.

It's too bad. It's pretty damned good, though slow to start.
I'm in the same camp as far as cable goes. The availability of Netflix and HULU have been a boon for me.
Through those services ... egads this sounds like an add... *shrugs* Anypoop, through those I've been able to see some pretty awesome shows and some fascinating movies I'd have never bothered to sit through all the general junk shows and commercials on TV for. They've also been a great way for me to find the three or four anime I've tried to give two shakes of a cat turd about in the last decade. From Sense8 to Adventure Time, Marvel's Daredevil and Jessica Jones, Classic Doctor Who, Classic Twilight Zone and Tales From The Dark Side, ALL the Star Trek Series (Except 'Enterprise'. I just can't)...
....and a line of text all by itself for the film "Boys In The Trees".... bugger me... that movie is modern-day ghost story greatness...
I highly recommend these things.

The fact that this is still a thing makes me pretty sad considering how far people keep saying we've come. If anything it actually makes me appreciate the CW DC shows that actually normalize homo/hetro/pan-sexuality...you know...cause it's actually fucking normal and not something to be treated as if it's the fucking Ebola epidemic and everyone's going to catch "The Gay" in 2000 fucking 18. -__-
You know, it IS sad. It's so damned sad to see this sort of thing, to me as well.
Sometimes, I know we've come so far as a nation in being decent to each other, treating each other at least with a degree of equality, if not with love. Unfortunately, we still have a Loooooooooong ways to go. Often I don't think many people realize just how far that is.
IE- The majority of American didn't even agree that it was morally fine for an interracial couple to be married, that's just a polling of over 50% mind you, until 1997. Nineteen-goddamn-ninety-seven.... that's an embarrassment. And there are schools in several states which are still segregated. *huffs* That sort of bullshit infuriates me for my genepool.
Still... you're adorable and entirely fuck-worthy. *claps* Nuff said.

Really hard to make a free speech argument here when it's the corporation saying no to their employees, which falls under private property and private companies making their own rules as to how things operate. Free speech only applies to public property and (to some degree) public organizations. As much as we want to force organizations to not be bigoted or to stand up to those foreign countries that might censor or pull their funding, The Almighty Dollar wins in the corporate world a majority of the time. It's actually why Disney took a stand in the 90's and didn't give a shit about the Southern Baptist boycott of their products just because they had Gay Days at Disneyland and Disneyworld and gave same-sex couples employed under them health insurance. They knew they were making MONEY having those events and that the LGBT employees were better off and getting their friends and families happier, so capitalism ended up on the right side of history there, too.
It is pretty sad that CN, despite being a Turner station, is more concerned about the conservative backlash and losing money than their artists and fans' enjoyment. I can only hope Pendleton Ward has a good enough contract on his IP to release some statements or short stories after the show's run that affirms the relationship, like J.K. Rowling did when she outed Dumbledore once the Harry Potter series ended.

Oh I agree, love. As it's a private company the ydo have the right to self-censor as much or little as they want. I certainly acknowledge that. I may have mis-communicated...
I was trying to express my anger and frustration with the same people who rant about their 'free speech' whenever it's someone telling them to shut their yap for being hateful and harassing others or spreading propaganda, orating their prayers in public schools, etc. etc., yet when it comes to something like this(ie- LGBTQ issues) they seem to disappear into the woodwork with nary a peep to be heard. Thus I mentioned the "South Park philosophers" as I recall the similar hooplah Trey Parker and Matt Stone and many of the show's fans made when the network refused to air anything showing Mohammad in an episode.
Still, agreed, love. Good observations.

If you recall South Park covered the Boy Scouts of America when they weren't allowing gay scouts and gay scout leaders and that lawsuit went all the way to the Supreme Court. They ended up saying "Hey, we shouldn't force companies to be inclusive, we should let them come around on their own" (which is entirely the Libertarian argument, proving once again their libertarian politics). Of course, it's hard to accept that because it's HIGHLY unlikely that companies would've "bowed to the free market" if the Civil Rights Act wasn't passed and I especially don't think they would've been accommodating to service animals and wheelchair-bound disabled people (accommodating them by remodeling bathrooms, doorways and parking spaces cost a goddamned FORTUNE after all) if the Americans with Disabilities Act wasn't passed in '91. "But my Invisible Hand of the FREE MARKET would've bitch-slapped them into submission!" Bullshit. Do you really think businesses with "No Coloreds" signs got publicly shunned in the 60's, or that the businesses that lacked handicapped access were losing significant business? Hell no, the majority of white/abled customers still just said "Not my circus, not my monkeys" and shopped there anyway. it would've taken much longer than they think for public pressure to force a change.
However regarding the BSA, South Park was right in the long run. All those people pulling their funding over the gay ban in the 2000's royally hurt them, their membership numbers aren't nearly what they used to be, so now they lifted the gay bans entirely, and are even recruiting girls (which is REALLY pissing off the right-wingers, as well as the Girl Scouts who've been struggling for years to compete) because they're desperate to get their membership back up.
I don't know. I think people should be tolerant and respectful to each other without NEEDING the government to force them to, but that's the world we live in.

Oh I agree, some good has come of the show but again, the point stands re: the perceived worth of "free speech" by some people's word (ie-those lovely folkes... you know who) and what they're actually willing to fight for(their own general feeling of comfort and little more).
Though on the side point of the show and it's makers, I would add that South Park also covered the issue of Trans people .... several times... and VERY badly, spreading misinformation and ill will which I still see people suffering the negativity from, so their overall worth is still shaky at best for my dollar. I stopped watching not too long ago , season 18-ish, I think... as it really felt like they'd begun to buy into their own press and were basically being contrarian about anything they found annoying or didn't want to understand. *shrugs* More 'dudebro' humour than biting social commentary... If others want to enjoy it, good for them. I'm glad they can find happiness. *shakes her head* They've kind of pissed on the bridge between us too many times for me to walk that road again.
I agree that it'd be great if people would be mature enough to live and let live without the government having to step in. Such as, say, leaving their goddamned Ten Commandments off the courthouse lawns, seeing as how we live in a legally-defined secular nation and that is public property ...but making such statements doesn't undo the fact that they exist and in multiple places. If people would treat each other as they claim that bible thing says they should we might not need laws at all but alas... here we are. *laughs*

*laughs*
(Screw it, I'm gonna say the whole rant.)
The funny thing is, I got into Adventure Time because of the Simon backstory/Mushroom War. See, there are all these creepypasta theories, and I was watching them on youtube, For the lulz. Ash on Pokemon is actually been in a coma since he was 11. Ed, Edd, and Eddy really takes place in purgatory. Adventure Time is set 1,000 years after a Nuclear Apocalypse... oh wait, that one's in the show. Is it a "creepypasta" if it's true??? Someone strung all the Simon/Marcy clips together. I was crying over this story before I watched the show.
Adventure Time, the show that is it's own Creepypasta theory.
And it's own gender-swapped fanfic. XD
I remember when that one episode What Was Missing was semi-banned. As in, they removed it from rerun rotation, but it was still on the DVD. I watched it very closely. What could possibly be hidden in it? It's actually about The Creative Process. Really deep metaphysical stuff about the Creation of any form of Art.
The old relationship is just there. It wasn't the main focus. It's barely implied. Oh god, she kept the band shirt she gave her. Cover their previous little eyes. They were just friends. Just friends.
Deny, deny, deny. Deny like cigarette-smoking government agents from The X-Files.
On the other hand, I was literally jump-off-my-chair cheering at the Stephen Universe episode Escape From Beach City. It was sooo vanilla, get the girl's phone number, but this was America we're talking about here, slipping it into a cartoon. They found a way to make it work, and at E for Everyone rating, when they wanted to. Get it? We've just been shown we can make shows with gay relationships (same-sex flirting, actually!) that are family-friendly and wholesome, but we just chose not to.

After re-reading this comment in it's entirety for the third time now I have come to a few conclusions.
1-I agree entirely, love, with both the sentiment and your rancor. This is a yet another blatant display of cowardice and catering to a perceived demographic over reality, integrity and dignity. Youtube is dripping in adorable videos of "Bubbline" and the two have the potential to be very inspirational to the youngest generation. Hell, they can be inspirational to anyone.... What CN has done is just pathetic, time and again.
2- We seem to have about the same meterstick on a few things. Adventure Time went from "eh... okay" to "Woah! Holy shit!" when I watched the two-parter introducing us to Mr Petrikov I was hooked, no turning back.
3- I'm going to get to see you someday. On that day there will be scrompin's.... *big eyes* Oh yes.... there will be.

From what I hear, The Legend of Korra was cancelled prematurely due to the lesbian relationship between Korra and Osami, but from what I'm reading on Wikipedia it might've just been ended early on it's own due to lower-than-expected ratings. I do know that it's another example of media getting REALLY paranoid about controversy and wanting to play it safe. Star Trek: TOS ran into that all the time on it's run, and Roddenberry had to push for creative freedom constantly and even told George Takei that they couldn't go a gay allegory episode because the network would've shut that RIGHT the hell down in the 60's.
