lived through this. It's even worse when they only thing to tell them apart if your not paying attention is where they will rest against you depending on where your at. It's always the one that gets on your lap and exposes their belly to you is the one that hated the belly rubs in my house. Now I only have one cat and it's the one that hates the belly rubs.
Two of my cats love belly rubs, one is pretty indifferent she sort of enjoys them but uses them more as a way to lure you in to play (she's a bit rough but not aggressive), and the last one hates full on rubs but you can rub his sides if he's curled up in your lap. It's my understanding that its a matter of saying they trust you not to go for their vulnerable spots when they expose their underside.
