Salutations everyone, Spino/Arenax here, and goodness is this a wonderful treat!
essenceofrapture most certainly did a PERFECT rendition and accurate depiction of A'renax the Styracsis, and it makes me smile just looking at it.
You can see the original here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/27249725/
The Dinosaurischians may be bestial and run on instincts from time to time, however they have technology here and there, but don't rely on it to thebpoint where they can'live without it. Despite their skintight, form fitting jumpsuits and environmental gear, their technological and societal(?) style and architecture is that of Dieselpunk, or to put it simply, anesthetics commonly seen in the 1940s to the early 1950s; a Dieselpunk world.
Thaaaat's right, they are Dieselpunk aliens! ^_^
But don't let their tech style fool you, its fairly advanced in function.
Here we have A'renax -my alternate self- out and about within a struture's underbelly most likely, or perhaps a zeppelin mooring station.
Goodness gracious me, Essence did a VERY fascinating work on the lighting, looks very warm and maybe tense. What also strikes,me impresssd about the lighting, is how it makes him/me appear yellow ^_^
A'renax's scales are a sickly olive drab green, but tends to look almost brown, which then looks yellow in some light. Color spectrums are awesome!
In addition, i love what they did with the belt; I had changed the belt design, especially the buckle, which you can see here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/25222722/
Next, all Saurians have only three fingers (or toes), which are that of a thumb, and two fingers, ending in sharp talons meant for slashing and fighting mainly, ut can be used for other things too.
Arenax's species -Styracsis- are alien Styracosaurus Albertensis, and along with all the other Ceratopsians, Ankylosaurs, Stegosaurs, Iguanodon, Parasaurolophus, and just a few other herbivore turned omnivores, they have the evolution gained feat of being anthro, rather than four legged and bestial.
Ceratopsians, and the other former herbivores of course are wide creatures by default in their natural stances -with Iguanodon and Parasaur being not as wide however- Arenax himself here, is actually 5.5 feet wide shoulder to shoulder.
That being said, ALL Dinosaurischians are asexual or genderless, but possess male personalities and masculine appearances. They have zero genitalia, and reoroduce ny laying eggs from their cloaca, which is at the fat base of the tail. These eggs contain genetic copies of the oarent, whom will look and sound exactly like the parent, but act and think differently.
Ceratopsians for example physique wise, are bulky, muscular, and slightly chubby in appearance. Their abdominal area has a humble belly, instead of abs as you can see here. Their oecs are existant, but not terribly pronounced( no nipples or ANY mammalian bits either).
Lastly, Ceratopsian Saurischian heads are still large for the most part (its hard for myself to illustrate rhat for the moment, perspecrices are challenging too, but Essence is very excellent ar it!). They range at four feet long, with elegant beaks, some are pointy and some are round. Their eyes are not in the front of rheir heads either, they are on the sides a decent deal, just like their terran counter parts, but can still see forward pretty well. Just don't be too baffled if they turn their heads a little to see something better with one of their eyes. Speaking of eyes all Saurians do no mt have Scleras -eye whites-, just iris and pupils.
Dinosaurischians do not have as many facial muscles, since their heads are mainly scales and bones. They can smile faintly, smirk faintly, snarl, frown faintly, and sneer, thiugh it could look a little strange since theybhave beaks too. To make up for this, they use different sound tones when they speak -My saurians only speak in Dinosaur noises. Their "speech boxes" aren't able to produce anything else-, as well as body language.
Hope I didn't nerd-out too hard here, i get excited about my Dinosaur Alien Creations and Characters.
MASSIVE credit goes to
essenceofrapture for drawing this perfect art piece, and credit for myself

Thank you so much for letting me commission you again my friend, I really appreciate it!

Epic! Wonderful pose and expression here. I also love the detail you've put into the character and their species. I too for my Triceratops race imagine that they would not have expressive faces, but I also imagined that their vocal expressiveness would more than make up for it. Their would be other non-verbal cues such as tail position, neck muscles, posture, and so forth.
Also, when reading the description I am reminded of the Drak from Barry Longyear's "Enemy Mine". If they reproduce with the same genetic material, wouldn't all of them be identical? If not, how did the differences arise?
They must not be proportioned like their dinosaur namesakes if they have mostly flat chests like this; feral ceratopsians have rounded chests and arches backs after all. Just you note they naturally have a quadrupedal stance so I was curious about that.

Glad you like it, Essence did an excellent job! ^_^
The Dinosaurischians don't have very expressive faces, they CAN pull off a few faint expressions from time to time, but not much. They mainly "communicate" through phermones coming from their scales, different sound tones, and body language, even gestures. However their Dinosaur sounds are those different tones; the Dinos are not able to speak other languages, though the Rapcsis can mimic, but that doesn't mean they'll understand what it means.
Never heard of "Enemy Mine", but yes ALL the Dinosaurischians are identical to one another; they look the same, and sound the same. However they will think differently, so there isn't a hive mind, plus their facial markings are actually caused by blood cells and scale cell pigmentation. This is to make them have some form of individuality, other than scent difference and the way they act being different.
For example, one of A'renax's children named "S'kirl", looks and sounds just like him, but has different facial markings, and acts differently.
Their chests are somewhat flat when in "upright" stance because their ribs hinge a little bit, as well as bones being realigned. When they go back to their natural primal appearance, their ribs unhinge so they look a bit wider, and appear similar to their Terran versions, including their chest. I hope that makes sense ^^;
They aren't even humanoid either, just creatures standing up. They don't have a buttocks either; their thighs/legs are on the sides of their torso, and their tail is a continuation of their torso, just like it is in their quadruped form. That being said, they aren't completely straight (or 90 degrees?) when standing up.

So the Dinosaurischians cannot speak human languages at all? I imagined my Triceratops race had vocal chords more akin to parrots and the like and so are capable of wide expression; they just speak from the back of the throat as it were, and the tongue plays minimal role in forming sounds (mostly inflection, tone, and the occasional click).
"Enemy Mine" is a novella by Barry Longyear that was made into a 1980s movie starring Dennis Quaid. Absolutely fantastic and well worth seeing; its one of my childhood favorites. I think you would enjoy it.
One thing that is bad about this lack of genetic diversity is their vulnerability to infection. If they catch some super virus, it's going to wipe them out pretty hard.
It does make sense a little bit, though the shoulders would also have to adjust. I think the bone and muscle shifting would have serious long term consequences if they do it too much. Sorry I'm so picky, it's the scientist in me!
I gathered the last bit from your post. I confess figuring out the tail is one of the most challenging aspects of figuring out my Triceratops race, because they do not have a four footed form, so how the tail functions, its shape, and the shape of the hips is something I have to figure out.

Yes you are sadly correct, they are incapable of speaking human, their voice boxes aren't designed for it. However their respective species vocalizations are their language. They all understand eachother; it'd be like having different accents.
For example Dinosaurischian Ceratopsians would have deep voices, but say...A Raptor would have a raspy high pitched voice akin to their sound inflections.
They do have an excellent immune system and gain adaptation over time, but i get what you mean; no species is perfect x3
Just takes practice and such; their scales are elastic too, which helps them gobble up prey whole and preferably alive, as well as bone and organ realignment, along with natural defense. Lets just say...Earth Weapons are useless on them for the most part.
Hmm...so a anthro-bipedal species? Yeah...you'd need to come up something anatomy wise that you are comfy with. Could be fun!
Not sure how either of us would communicate, unless you can speak Dinosaur enough to be understood. Evwn thwir robots speak Dino- so a non-saurian would be hearing a combination of sped up Robotic-Dinosaur noises.

Okay, good information on their language there. And as for communication between our characters, I think if they didn't understand each other at first, they would learn how to communicate, either with my character learning to speak your language, or we just learn each other's language when we hear it, after long enough time together.
I'm not sure what the practical benefits there are to vore; not something I'm interested in. That said, I find it difficult to believe that all earth weapons are useless; strong enough incendiary or fast enough kinetics should work on just about anything!
I think they will have mostly flat chest but somewhat arched backs; the tail would be necessary for balance because with the head horns and frill they are otherwise quite top-heavy. The tail weight and the hefty legs help bring their center of balance back down. It would also help them balance as they bent over, so the hips would be a bit deeper than a humans; they could do a lot while bent over and for far longer than a human could. But they couldn't go full quadruped.

Its not exactly for vore, they were designed to consume organic life and destroy it, even rebirth victims or enemies as Dinosaurs; a self-production army so to speak. The Dinosauriachians consume biomass to become literally and visually stronger, as well as get the nutrients they need to survive. These creatures were "programmed" to have an eternal hunger, or lust to devour organic life, which is partislly why they even feast on eachother, though sometimes its for fun and other cultural reasons too. They eere supposed to be a now dead species' super soldier bio weapons, but it was too late for the Saurians to get "completed" enough to "save the day", so they were left alone on their habit-world, evolving and growing in their own way.
Human weapons are gas powered and weak against Saurian scales. Their scales are thick and hard, yet can be soft and highly elastic. Their bones -especially ceratopsians amd any od the big Dinos- are heavy and thick, rather than light and frail. My Alien Dinosaurs are quintessentially bullet proof; not even a Gau-8 could kill them.
You'd need really high explosives, or energy weapons of some sort to any real lasting damage, otherwise it was game over before the battle even started. You'll have to be literally be as powerful either physically, or technologically as they are, or you're pretty much screwed, if that makes sense.
They are extremely tough to fight.
Arched back as in archrd forwards, or arch backwards for a slight hunch? I believe you'll need a thick, strong neck to support a heavy head ^^;
I've been thinking about doing a "head sketch" study for the head and necks fir them; could be good practice, since i am trying to get used to drawing their majestic, yet slightly complex heads.
For example, Arenax's head is roughly 3-4 feet wide actually, since Ceratopsian skulls were..rather large ^////^
Plus with him actually being 5.5 feet wide, I...might need to sketch what that could look like, considering he is not actually humanoid or anthropamorphic really- he's a bestial alien that can be bipedal and realign parts of the skeleton when standing, and vice versa to go back to their natural stance. I hope that makes sense.

Rebirth victims? So they would turn them into dinosaurischians too?
Well, as always, necessity is the mother of all invention. If push comes to shove, they'll find a way to make weapons to hurt them. Biological superiority only goes so far. One has to always be ready to adapt.
Yes, my Triceratops race has strong neck muscles and upped body muscles (as I hope the most recent picture showed). The back is arched outward a little so the thick tail flows a little more naturally; so they cannot lay flat on their backs, but they do get additional mobility and strength.
I would love to see you keep working on detailing those sketches. Go for it!

If it is a no-Dinosaurischian yes, they can rebirth them as a Dinosaur -it'll be a clone of the eater, just like their own offspring. However, they can also biologically reconstruct another being since they tend to extract the genetic memeory or "essence" if you will, of their victims, keeping their DNA swimming in their own for a time. They can use DNA strands to recknstruct your body, but it takes time, bt acquiring additional biimass from food cans peed the process up.
That is very true, assuming they can even adapt against a foe. Nowadays barely anyone adapts to anything
Indeed, you do look a bit more muscular :3
Aaah, thats what you meant, that makes sense yes. I might try to remember that when i trt out the sketches i have in mind.

I've seen the concept before and there is a diminishing returns aspect to it; not everyone eaten can be so reborn; not enough material to go around. Even so, definitely not what I'd want to have happen to me!!
Thank you! I do need to figure out the kind of weapons my Triceratops race will use (not to mention the name of their race)!
What sort of sketches do you have in mind?

Oh? I've never heard of these "Watchmaker" creatures before, whats the scoop on them?
Hehe yes they are intelligent, but they were "programmed" to have an eternal hunger/urge to feed on organic creatures, so they can become literally and physically stronger one way or another, even grow taller in some cases.

They're helper creatures to an alien race in the novel called "Moties". They look like smaller versions of Moties but that's either due to convergent evolution or common ancestry (been a long time since I read the novel so I don't remember which) instead of being the same species. They help Engineer caste Moties with fixing and building stuff.

Thank you! I do my best with what I know of each- if i get confused, I look it up for clarification.
Plus there's a few reasons they have a belly, but here is one of them: try fitting a crop, a gizzrd (both connected by a fleshy tube), AND your stretchy intestines inside a body. Not easy to have a flat abdomen wuth those factors ^^;
