Hello, everyone!
On the update page for Morenatsu ~Revisited~ version 0.4, I hinted that we had a cool surprise announcement in store. We decided that now is the time to let you in on what we've been working on.
What we have today is the culmination of months of planning and preparation. Revisited has come a long way since I started the project a year ago, and now I'm ready to put all the lessons I've learned into creating the best version of the game we can make.
Stormsinger Studios is proud to announce Homecoming ~Morenatsu Revisited~!
Now, I know there are a lot of questions you might have, so I'll do my best to answer a few I anticipate right now:
1. What is this?
A. Homecoming is a ground-up recoding of what we've already finished for Revisited. We're also increasing the game's resolution to a widescreen format, so everything should look cleaner and more organized. Essentially, think of this as a soft reboot for the Revisited project.
2. Why are you doing this?
A. For a long time, we've felt constrained trying to meet the expectations set by hardcore fans of the original game. We believe it's time to acknowledge what the project really is: an adaptation. This means a lot of things will change going forward. Homecoming will have entirely new art, music and sound assets to complement the change in direction. This also means that the classic art will no longer be featured in the game.
Leaving the old art behind has benefits, though! The entire game will now scale to a larger resolution, with the new assets being created specifically with widescreen in mind. It also means the file size will be drastically reduced, since there will no longer be a need to have both “Classic” and “Revisited” versions of everything.
3. Will this change the story?
A. Not any more than it has been so far! Revisited originally started out as a project to bring Morenatsu to a more accessible platform and correct grammatical errors. Along the way, it morphed into a project that tried to update the stories and give them more emotional depth. The same quality of writing you see in Revisited will continue on into Homecoming.
We are embracing the “adaptation” aspect of the project, though. This means that areas where we feel there needs to be a change, such as the inclusion of female sprites, we will be making adjustments.
4. You keep using the word “adaptation”. What do you mean by that?
A. Like when your favorite manga gets an anime version, or an old classic movie gets a modern revival, we see Homecoming as an opportunity to update Morenatsu and give another spin on the classic storylines.
5. What will happen to Morenatsu ~Revisited~ now?
A. The project is formally morphing into Homecoming, but we still have some plans for the old version. Frostclaw is hard at work finishing up a bonus route for the game, and when complete he will release it along with the source code for Revisited. This is an exciting moment for a lot of us, because we're finally able to fulfill the promise we made way back when and open up Revisited's code to fanmade routes! With the source code release, Revisited will also fall under the Creative Commons license, allowing you to make whatever changes you want as long as you still provide credit to Morenatsu Team and Stormsinger Studios.
6. When can we expect the first release of Homecoming?
A. Since we're recoding the game from scratch, the first release likely won't be for a long while. I'm personally aiming for an August release, but with all the behind the scenes stuff we have to organize still, it would be unwise for me to make any promises.
7. What changes can we expect?
A. A new UI, updated menus, increased resolution, new sprites for every character, new music, new sound effects...basically, new everything! The stories will come at a faster pace than before too, since we've spread writing duties between all four members of Stormsinger Studios. I anticipate having most of the original six routes back in the game, along with a sizable chunk of Torahiko's route finished by August.
Aaaand, that should about cover it, I think. As always, we're open to questions.

Well, that's cool to hear. Good luck with this getting ready by August. Although I have to ask will the extra route be added to the Homecoming version of this project at some point? I would assume so, but I figured I'd ask. And perhaps I could get a hint of the character that this extra route will focus on? If you don't want to give that away that's okay though.
Anyway good luck to you and your team.

Here's hoping your new team won't repeat the same mistake from the original creators of Morenatsu: Inconsistencies with each route due to one writer doing one story. Hopefully you can get dedicated writers and proof-readers to help in the process, pretty sure there's a lot who'd be willing to give time and effort for it.
Beyond that, we're pretty stoked for what's ahead. And we wish you the best in tackling the challenge of finishing the routes for Kyouji, Tarou, and the beloved Tora.

Hello, Dzahn. It's very cool and interesting to hear this news. But i have some questions...
1. Why did you reduce muscles of Torahiko? Realistic issues about looking like an ordinary teenager? Well, people (at least, me) don't care about that in dating sim.
2. Will we see the sprite of Hiroyuki on the screen too (with same quality as Torahiko, Tatsuki etc.)?

1. Considering the age of Torahiko (17 going on 18) and the average build for someone with his hobbies (swimming), we felt it appropriate to give him more realistic proportions. As part of my vision for Homecoming, we're going through all the characters and trying to give a more realistic spin to them.
2. That is going to be a surprise.

YOu guys are amazing! congratulations and thank you for all what you have done to this game :) it's such a special feeling when i read about Morenatsu, for some people might be just a shit game haha but for me is very special really touched my heart, well Juuichi did so i really thank you guys we can expect a sequel someday if everything works?
If you could perhaps get an artist who is more true to the original art, I'd gladly help fund it to assist in your project.
I apologize if this seems like an insult, but part of what made the original game so good was its fantastic art and style, and I don't get near the same feeling from the art published by your current lead artist.
Even if it takes me $300-500 a month, I'd gladly help just to ensure the game not only plays optimally but looks just as gorgeous as the original if not better.
(please reply, I'm being 100% serious about the art funding thing. I'll even commission the artist for the assets personally if you can find someone talented).

Unfortunately Dzahn will not listen to you. His whole team loves this style and they aren't going to change it. The tone of the story is already quite different in what they have, and they want the visuals to be representative of that change, too. (Dzahn's words about art-style).
I'll let Dzahn post his own comment when he can, but I'm just gonna throw my opinion here. The original, while I absolutely adored it (trust me, I obsessed over it), had a lot of problems with the art. Many of the husbandos looked a lot older than they were meant to be portrayed as. Additionally, the background images were merely photos, with various blur filters on them, some which looked kinda out of place.
A lot of people are holding onto the nostalgia of the original game, and while that's all well and good, we're not going for that. If you want to experience the original, just download rtlstien's Morenatsu Revival project. It brings the original game over to Ren'Py, and you don't have to change your system locale just to play it.
Take into consideration that the new art, while different, also depicts each character more closely to their actual age than the OG did.

Well, people were not bothered by the fact that they looked older. They were hot, cute and good characters generally. The questions of realism in the visual novel (dating simulator) are not needed. It's my opinion. Nevertheless, people also like this change as it seems to me. That's fine then.
Thank you for the feedback ^_^
I've addressed this concern in a recent journal:

I feel I need to better clarify what I am meaning.
I can understand you are trying to go the free/cheap route by using an artist you are close with.
Most likely, if you'd not been close anyone to do it for free, the idea to even start this would've never taken off,
but what I am saying is that I would be great if you could hire an artist who can more beautifully recreate the feeling/style from Morenatsu
Like, the entire story takes place in japan (unless you plan to change that), so it would be nice if the art style showed THAT feeling and style still.
It doesn't have to look identical or even a bit similar, and the characters should look more accurate, that is fine,
but maybe you don't have the best artist for the job. You have the most convenient artist.
Also, related to the design/background.
The a reason the backgrounds were blurred is to not take away from the main part of the game, the characters.
As it is, It doesn't appear the artist has the style that makes the art actually pop and catch players attention.
They just blend into the background. Now, I may be wrong, it may not be the artist,
it may be because I find my attention is drawn more to the background than the character.
I hope this makes sense, and my intentions are not to mean anything ill, harmful, or rude towards anyone.
I am simply giving my opinion, and hope it can be respected, at the least.

I understand what you're saying, but everything you pointed out is the result of deliberate design decisions I've made. You're assuming that I'm unhappy with the way everything looks, when in fact everything is precisely the way I want it to look. I am the background artist, and all artwork gets the final approval from me. The art style changed to a soft western-eastern hybrid because I wanted it that way, Torahiko looks slimmer and more like a swimmer because I wanted it that way, the backgrounds stand out more because I want it that way. The specific aesthetic we're going for with all the art and music assets is "dream pop", which is a dramatic change from the original meant to accompany the dramatic shift in writing style and tone for the rewrites and the new content.
Perhaps Homecoming isn't the project for you? There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, a close friend of mine recently finished up the port for the Morenatsu Revival team, who's entire goal is to create an experience that's as close as possible to what the original team would have wanted. You can check it out here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/26153752/

I’m not assuming you are unhappy with anything. I am assuming you are using the most convenient tools you have at your disposal, because it’ll cost you less. If I had an artist willing to work for free I’d probably use them too. It’s also free if I just do the backgrounds myself. There is such a thing as nonprofit. You can receive money and use said money to hire a real, experienced, background artist, and hire an artist who’s more experienced with anatomy and has a style that stands out more.
The finished result can never be perfect, but it can be great. And right now, it’s not even looking like it’ll be mediocre.

"Determination is a willingness to change as needed". It is also the willingness to continue on in the face of adversity, and rise above it. You call yourself stubborn, but able to keep your mind open to other opinions, but that's where you contradict yourself. You are keeping your mind closed off to other peoples' opinions, because a lot of people do actually like this change of style. You seem like one of those people who play games because "THE GRAPHICS ARE SO REALISTIC!", instead of legitimate reasons like amazing gameplay, or beautiful story, and that is actually quite upsetting. This visual novel is about a young man's return to his hometown, where he reconnects with his friends, and ultimately can fall in love with one of them. The art is meant to serve as a backseat to the story, because the reader/player is meant to FEEL the story. Dzahn explained to you, very professionally, I might add, that the approach we were going for was different. Because the story is taking such a dramatic change from the original (which, let's face it, the original had so many inconsistencies and was handled poorly), we felt it necessary to change things up. The fact that you're judging Homecoming based on a single conceptual screenshot, without having seen any of the other assets is truly a show of ignorance. I hope that, given time, when more has actually been showcased, that we can assuage your doubts, because we are seeing this thing through to the end. If not, there are plenty of other avenues you can approach. :)
Before you start a conversation, don't assume my personal preferences. Never have I played a game for its' graphics, I'd rather sacrifice good graphics for performance, in fact. The thing with visual novels, which is different than other games, is the fact they need to look visually pleasing, due to their inability to build a world with anything other than words. If you take away the art you're reading a choose you own adventure game and might as well play a game from choiceofgames.com, which have fantastic stories and don't use any art. Morenatsu would NOT be as known and loved as it is today without its' beautiful character art. Do you think DokiDoki would've been looked at under the same light if its' art didn't draw people to it? Probably not. I'm not basing my opinion on one simple image, my opinion is based on the art which the current artist has put forth. If you'd prefer I use less tact and just say it, I will stop dropping hints. Get a better artist. Clearly, the project wouldn't have even been a thing if there wasn't an artist so close to the creator will to do things for free. And that's the only reason you have all convinced yourself to use them, it's more convenient. That fact still hasn't been denied.
Hey, I appreciate any feedback, negative or positive, so if you feel like there's something I could improve on, feel free to send me a note (you don't have to, of course).
However, I'd also appreciate if you gave me a chance. I understand I'm by no mean an amazing artist or anything like that, but I am doing my best to improve in order to deliver the best I can make.
However, I can't help but notice I see a problem with what you propose, namely that the undertaking is a lot more enormous than it might seem. We're talking 100+ backgrounds, 20+ CGs, 20+ detailed sprite sets, UI design, and other minor stuff. Your proposal of 500 dollars a month, while quite an impressive commitment for a game you don't really have any ties to (beyond just liking Morenatsu, I mean), is unrealistic, especially if you want to hire a really amazing artist. Unless they dedicate themselves solely to the game from that moment forth (which is unrealistic for only 500 dollars a month), they'd probably be finished a lot longer after the rest of the development is finished.
It also requires us to put a lot of trust in people we absolutely do not know: we're talking very big numbers here, and we have absolutely no guarantee you or the artist will still want to pay or keep working on the project 2 years down the line, probably after the writing has been finished.
If we take everything at a bare minimum numbers wise (and estimating the lowest price you can pay for quality, even though the numbers I’m about to use are EXTREMELY cheap), it would cost you around:
100 × 50 = 5000 (100 BGs)
20 × 80 = 1600 (20 CGs)
15 × 120 = 1800 (15 sprite sets)
For a total of 8400 dollars (again, we’re talking barest of minimum and rounded down), or around 420 dollars for 20 months (notice I didn’t count the UI and other minor stuff, like update art and stuff like that).
I simply cannot trust someone I’ve never met to give 400+ dollars every month for almost two years without missing a single payment for a project he doesn’t have any ties to. And maybe you know you’ll be able to do it, because you have prescience and you know exactly you won’t need the extra cash for one reason or another, but asking us to trust you to deliver such a big sum over the course of two years is, I hope you can understand, quite simply ridiculous.
Lastly, you assume wrongly that the project exist thanks to Dzahn meeting and having a cheap artist on board, and that he’s keeping me around because of personal reasons. However, Dzahn had already began working on the project a few months before I arrived, and I simply asked to join him some time after the first update. We grew close while working on the project, and not the opposite. So, before you start a conversation, don't assume you know our personal history.
I do hope you understand we're not turning your offer down out of arrogance or pride, but because of practicality, as well as having a work environment and people we are comfortable with.

You asked for feedback, I sent you a note.
I apologize for not being able to respond sooner, but I left you a bit of the reason why in the note.
Anywho~ I could double it to 1000 a month, 500USD every 2 weeks (I'll pay the money directly to the artist so it gets done).
With your estimations, the entire project would have its art done in about 8 months.
Renpy doesn't require art to progress either. I could pay for Sprites first, since those will actually be utilized during the programming of renpy.
And, the project can go on, and when the backgrounds and cg scenes are done they can be added in fairly easily.
If you don't ever reach for the grapevine, how'll you learn to trust someone? You aren't always going to be given adequate amounts of time to get to know someone and trust them. You could be at work and meet a stranger one day, and your boss tells you that you HAVE to trust this stranger because your life and career are in their hands. Is it really worth the risk of not trusting them?
I know this isn't that type of situation, but regardless we tend to stick with what we practice, and if we never practice with the little things, we'll never be ready for the big things. Besides, if you don't trust me, just keep doing your art anyways. If I'm not to be trusted and something goes wrong, or i stop paying or disappear, you've still got the art you worked on. Have a contingency plan, ALWAYS.
I am fully aware of him keeping you around for personal reasons, but you have to admit it helps him keep you around even more since you happen to be an artist. It is convenient for him to keep a good relationship with you, even if he is aware of the fact or not. I'm not assuming personal history, there is defiantly ulterior motive involved.
We are prideful, it's nature. There's always a bit involved, and it is clear that your team is indeed prideful of their work.
Pride help in changing ones perspective, and perception is reality.

I think the art it's good, and everyone should appreciate it, because dzahn and his team have done all of this without asking anything about us except patience, they are doing this not for money or some kind of reward, they are doing this because they love the story and their characters just as we do.
Personally I'm very interested about this project and the way this is going, how it will look when finally it's finished.
If you love what you do guys, so keep doing it!! All of you are doing an amazing job here!! We'll wait 'till you say "i'ts finally ready". And if someone doesn't like it, well... It has a Creative Common license, and the source code will be released soon... So... Make your own morenatsu, with your own style, and your own music, that way you won't be able to complain!!!
(Sorry the English, I'm not a native English speaker )

I feel like the face thing on the edge of the speech area is a good addition especially if it changes depending on the context. While I prefer Torahiko's original look I think yours is suitable too and it's your project your efforts and interpretations and I respect that , I imagine it will be a turn off for some. I hope you can accomplish what you're going for. Can't wait for the next update.
Well Torahiko is not just a swimmer. It is said that besides joining the swimming team and learning how to cook, he began bodybuilding in order to impress Hiroyuki. So the shape he was in, originally, is pretty much accurate IMO. He definitely looks younger and slimmer now but that's not how he's supposed to be I think, just how you'd like him to be.
Also I feel the backgrounds are taking a step down from the originals. I can see that some might think that having realistic pictures, even if blurry, was unfitting, to put it in some way, in contrast with the 2D sprites, I personally liked it that way too, but in any case, the quality of the backgrounds that have been shown so far is lacking.
The thing is, since we're talking about public domain content, you can do what you're doing and that's perfectly fine, just like you said: you're doing what you want with it. There's many people who like such changes, but there's others who doesn't, and it sucks for the rest of us.
Still, good luck, you've got a lot up ahead, and what's been already done, despite my views about some areas, is laudable. So here's hoping that you reach your goals!

I got to admit, while I was originally hesitant to seeing that the old artwork will be replaced I can see why you're doing this. As in the long run with their needing to be new CG's and the new characters that will be introduced within some of the revisions of the story. It would be better to replace the original artwork. As eventually the styles would be inconsistent, and trying to recreate the new sprites in the style of the classic one could lead to some backlash as to why something small like the shading, lines, designs, style, etc isn't as close to the classic would have more time spent on needless small details with fans not being satisfied that it isn't as something they wanted. I'm wishing you all the best of luck on the new artwork and the new direction this project will be taking.
Excited on how Mitsuhisa's new sprite will look like.

As much as I love the idea of new sprites for an adaptation of an old VN, I came to love each one as they currently are. I want to see how much they change in the fandom.
Sorry if this sounds like a rant but actually I am anticipating the new sprites and everything else new to come

I know this was posted since may but I just wanted to support the original art style. I really really like them looking older. It's like memories held close to my heart. I'm not saying no to new sprites, since that carries a lot of benefits, but this look quite "Moe" doesn't convince me. I'm happy for the ones who like it tho. You guys are doing a cool job anyways. Good luck.
I have seen Morenatsu come and go over the many years but this was probably the very last thing I ever expected to see or wanted to see come true. Right from the beginning of the bus to what I was allowed to view and properly analyze thus far-this project honestly feels like a deep, dark, absolutely abysmal rework and re-release of an unfinished visual novel that was new back when I was still in high school. It was a mix of heartbreak and this deep sense of a community not giving a real damn about the quality of the original project-settling for the lowest bar possible just for the obsessive fans who are still in denial that the project has been left unfinished. Honestly it feels rather manipulative. You arent really giving anyone a canon to go by that will fill a gap for the unfinished routes and missing content. It just feels in my gods-honest opinion a really thin narrative of fanfiction.
And yes the characters are all free domain and belong to nobody but its awfully hard to feel like a project should be accepted when nothing is really being done to convince me that this is anything but a really weak and poorly balanced fan's interpretation. In fact fanfiction is probably the best word to describe it. Fanfiction of a works that made a big impact.
The new photos and backgrounds lack any sort of artistic consistency with the original works, and the artwork reminds me an awful lot of those low-key fan arts you find anywhere on the internet you can find just by hunting for names in the corner of DeviantArt's darkest alleyways. I would say its an insult but I feel now that maybe the word is a little too soft. I would personally say perversion.
I cannot really say I am being harsh, but well merited to critique a works based on something I was and still am quite passionate about to my core. Granted I have gotten older but not even the mightiest of critics can sit down and say that Dawn of Justice was a good movie when they expected soem real work and effort to go into these projects. Morenatsu took years, years upon years to do and it cost the original team time, money, and collective 'talent' to bring us what we got.
Its a weak project, I wont endorse it whatsoever, and I will still recommend anyone and everyone to ditch this and stick with the original materials. If you want the old routes that werent finished so badly then you can always keep it to your imagination. Just because you slap Morenatsu's name on it and write a chapter in it-doesnt make it good. You can take any book and write your own lil story inside of it but you would have done some serious damage to the words the original writer left for you. And certainly better.
2/10
Why 2? Because at least most of the dialogue was intact that I was fully familiar with and you actually used the sprites despite them all feeling like they never belong on the same page.

Well, can't please everyone.
There are other projects popping up that might be more to your liking. Have you considered checking out Morenatsu Rework?

I have zero interest in a group whose profiting from monetizing a cheap rework. I have seen their take last night as hon3sty it still feels off.
There are way better people out there who could have done the sprites. AledonRex draws Morenatsu religiously and he is damn good at it. I got art from him twice. He is expensive but at least he can draw the characters.
Omegalupus, he'll even any regular kemono style artist could do the job.
Sprites aside-im not supporting a project whose trying to make a buck off freeware that is still free, easy to install, and better.
If ya share the cold piss between yas-you still just ruin two pairs of trousers.

Awesome! Recently downloaded Revisited and is by far one of the best version of the game! I also like the fact that you're making the characters a little more realistic in both personality and body types. Can't wait to see what the final version of what the whole crew looks like. Best of luck and give my best regards to everyone on the team. And maybe one day I'll make my own VN because this adaptation is getting my gears going.
I downloaded Homecoming a few days ago and played through the first Chapter... You guys are geniuses! I felt so MANY emotions when coming back to the story and I feel its a HUGE improvement. The music, the story is so realistic in a way, new sprites... I feel like the older version lacked a lot of things, but it was still amazing (it had its charm) and now that there is FINALLY someone continuing the VN... It made me soo freaking happy. I caan't even explain these emotions. I cried from all the memories/nostalgia... Honestly I've became a huge fan of your project and I am impatiently waitting for my Torahiko rotue haha or in general for all the chapters to come!
I'm not sure how much this means to you and your team... But you guys are amazing and I hope you get as much support, love and inspiration to finish the game to its final form.
Thank you for giving me this amazing beginning of 2020 haha!
