It was fun to do!
You were spot on with the "plot too big for the story".
I had so many thoughts on how to devlop it and actually wanted to grow Vince's character much more. My initial though was for him to be a fellow survivor fighting through his own series of slow changes.
But alas, deadlines are deadlines.
I'll be on the lookout if you decide to do any more!
