You could use Audacity, which is free to download here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
If you use Windows you should also be able to record using a program that's just called Sound Recorder, which is in All Programs - Accessories.
Apple devices I think come with their own free recording software as well, but I don't use them so I don't know exactly what it's called.
