Pokemon Tabletop Variants: Koffing and Hakking
Koffing: The Poison Gas Pokémon. No. 07 in the Grabenfeld Pokédex.
Hakking: The Chlorine King Pokémon. No. 08 in the Grabenfeld Pokédex.
In the dangerous, war-ravaged fields of Grabenfeld there are many unique and unusual Pokémon variants that have developed over the years. One of the more well known, as well as one of the most dangerous, examples can be found in the regional variants of the Koffing evolutionary line.
The regional variant of Koffing stands out compared to the more common breed found throughout the Kanto, Johto and other regions in several distinctive ways. First is the coloration, a noxious yellow-green that has been produced due to exposure to long abandoned gas canisters that litter the silent battlefields of Grabenfeld's past. A steady diet of chlorine gas and other chemical agents has not only given their bodies a distinctive coloration, but has also tinged their markings and eyes a lurid, angry red.
Another major trait that makes them stand out is the presence of wicked, jagged spikes of crystallized toxins that protrude from their rotund bodies, each projection fully capable of piercing skin and infusing any unsuspecting Pokémon or Trainer with the poisonous payload carried by the Poison-types. In fact, they're fully aware of how dangerous their spikes are, and they aren't afraid to use them in tandem with their incredibly poisonous gas to considerable effect.
The common Koffing may seem silly, even good natured and lethargic in some cases, but the Grabenfeld variant is outright malicious and aggressive, seeking to corner and attack any Pokémon that enters their poison-rich territory. The real problem arises when they evolve, though, and grow into the regional evolution known as Hakking. Hakking is mean-spirited and violent, considered something of a bully by Trainers, but is unquestionably powerful as far as Poison-types go.
Hakking bears a striking crystalline crown and a number of smaller, almost parasitic orbs that circle the noxious mass like moons to a planet. When approached or threatened, the Poison-type can order the tinier extensions of itself to self destruct, only for them to coalesce back into their previous state shortly thereafter. As the regal connotations of its crown and "king" appellation would indicate, it's also not above sending the subordinate orbs off to retrieve poisonous gas canisters and other dangerous substances for it to greedily feed on, increasing its own toxicity in the process.
Hakking evolves from Koffing starting at level 32, and is found commonly around the old trenches and weapon sites of Grabenfeld. Koffing can actually be purified using a held item, the Charcoal Matrix, so that it evolves at level 35 into a traditional Weezing. Likewise, a normal, non-Grabenfeld Koffing can be given a War-Torn Canister to force evolution into the more dangerous Hakking.
Art for a Pokémon tabletop campaign I've been kicking around for a while, revolving around unique variants and all-new world spaces. Grabenfeld, based on an amalgam of WW1/WW2 and Post-World War Germany, is a police state with a long history of conflict and a sad history of warfare that has lead to some dangerous evolutionary variants cropping up in the local Pokémon population.
