ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL
Better Duckbilled Yoshi
Part 1 / 3
This is the first of three submissions that will mark the one week run up to my first year anniversary here on FA. Today will be featuring the power of collaboration.
When I joined, I didn’t exactly have a fursona. It is for that reason that my first two avatars were King Roo and Brian the Scorchio from Neopets. This wasn’t from lack of having an idea behind one. I just never bothered to draw a Yoshi Ducky and felt I lacked the ability to do so to an acceptable capacity.
Then, about a month after joining, I met the very talented and ever friendly wingedhamham. She was doing free chibis and offered to do one for me if I’d be interested. So, I sent her a basic description of “A duckbilled dinosaur with the body of a Yoshi.”
Based on the description, I was must surprised when she presented my character with an actual duck beak instead of the duckbill found on a duckbilled dinosaur. However, it wasn’t long before I completely fell in love with this artistic concept and am so, so glad she did what she did. Could you see me without the beak of a duck? I know I can’t. Nope, nope, nope!

The design of my character with wingedhamham became my very first collaboration here on FA. Subsequently, my second and third would be with her as well with her doing an additional work for me that was based after the simple concept of my character wearing a black vest, white t-shirt, and a pair of shorts. This design would later evolve into the look you see me with every day when nishi designed the adorable piece where he replaced the black clothing with blue.

But I digress. The third collaboration with wingedhamham was actually my first written venture with anyone on the site. Through private messages, we evolved the characters of Sai, Taavi, and Devon and took turns writing what would eventually become a tale of three rodents called Love & Friendship.

The experience and good times brought about by working with wingedhamham on Love & Friendship inspired me to seek out other ways I could work with others to not only have a good time, but improve my ability as a writer as well. Fortunately, a good friend I met through wingedhamham ended up being just the source of inspiration I had been looking for. However, he was more than just another collaborator. He was the friend / colleague I had been searching for since the day I got heavily involved in writing my style of fiction over ten years ago. If you haven’t guessed yet, I am speaking of the talented artist, nishi, of course!
His first work that inspired me to no end was a series he put together entitled The Circle Saga. Many grand discussions sparked through the sections of this work and, as time passed, we came to share ideas between one another with respect to our various projects. I credit him largely in setting me straight on why my first publication attempt, The City of Solitude, was a failure and for bringing to the point where I am nearly ready to send off my second endeavor to get noticed by the publishing community at large.

Back to the point, though, I had wanted to try writing a very open ended story that featured the characters of all those I have had the pleasure to befriend here on FA. This effort became the Creative Campaign and, in large part, featured many characters from Nishi’s cast of amazing characters. His kindness in allowing me to use them to fill in key points where I had nobody else made the story an uber success on many levels.

The great times that were had in the Creative Campaign didn’t end there. In fact, the fun continues with nishi’s series that is dedicated after three of his characters that I borrowed in making the series. These fine fellows make up the mercenary group The Quick and the Angry and there far more interesting adventures can be read about by following the link below.

As if working with nishi and wingedhamham wasn’t fun enough, I have recently had the pleasure of collaborating with another great friend, azuredragon. At current, we are working on a couple of great ideas. However, at present, I invite you to read over his creative take on the inspirational work, The Little Blue Dragon. He really found ways to enhance the characters while making the story far more believable. His style of writing has really given me much to think about and has helped me to grow even more as a writer.

Kazootles! It’s hard to believe all this has happened in just one year. Needless to say, reading, seeing, and hearing all of your thoughts have really opened me up as a person both personally and professionally and I can hardly wait to work more with all of you to keep this wonderful process going. Here’s to another great year of fun and learning! Oopa!
BONUS NOTE
There’s a Yoshi Cookie to anyone who can get the pun behind the title of this submission. :)

It wouldn't have been the same without you, Toroth. Actually, I wasn't going to start my series with this particular entry. However, the work you and Nishi have done recently prompted me to reverse the sequence in homage to just how much you guys have helped me become a Better Duckbilled Yoshi. :)
As for my fursona, I am so happy with how everyone has helped me to develop it. They say we as people are a product of our environments and I am quite happy with how being here with all of you has made me into what I am now. I honestly wouldn't change a thing and am eager to see what other interesting collaborations lie in store in the future. Oopa!

*blush* Thanks.
There have been things added to drawings of my character's fursona that have just seemed so cool, I just had to add them and make them an official part of the character:
friskywoods Was the first person to draw Toroth with the head-spikes.
skrimpf drew Toroth's robin's egg-blue tummy scales extending down further and on the other side of the tail
bridgeportcat drew Toroth as a luchadore wrestler, leading to me giving the idea to differentiate the li'l guy from me a little bit by having Toroth be a die-hard lucha libre fan (as opposed to me being just a general US pro wrasslin' fan).
I can't remember for the life of me who first drew Toroth with the arrowhead tail, but it's such a cute and character-defining look, I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner.

What you mention here is really the core as to why I love being a part of a place such as this. Artistic interpretation is just such an amazing thing. Being able to view someone's work and then freely remark as to how it makes you feel is a most wonderful thing. Especially when, as the artist receiving the remark, it makes you realize possibilities you never even at first knew were there all thanks to the amazing imagination of someone else. :)
This said, developing one's fursona based on the delightful insights of talented friends and colleagues is truly a most magical thing. Just think of what further time and contact with others will do to evolve our characters? The possibilities are truly endless. :)

Sorry it took me a while to get to this! I read into it the other day, it was fun seeing how your character and activity on here developed with all these different projects and stories that came up. (: Hurray for a full year of FA! I'm glad I got to run into you here and work with ya on some projects, and talk lots and lots about all sortsa stuff. (: Plenty of good times had, and more to come too, I hope!
Indeed. Too many good times to count and I can only imagine how many are still ahead in the future. Like I noted, and I hope it isn't overkill to say so, you really have made a tremendous difference inpact on my overall creative ability and thought structure. I'd be running into a wall over-and-over again without ever knowing why if you hadn't brought your perspective into the picture and, for that, I am eternally grateful. Oopa!
In the coming days I am eager to release my additional bits to celebrate the big 1st anniversary. The next one is another homage and will serve to update my current "Featured Image" slot. I was originally going to wait and make these posts all on September 3rd. However, after your comic and Toroth's piece, I couldn't help but move this entry ahead a bit. :) Gabby-Gabby-Gaboo!
