As for the scanner... if it only happens after it's been on for a while my armchair diagnosis would be that metallic connection or weld on it's internal boards fails after it's been used a few times. Or it could be damage on the internal ribbon cables that fails to transmit data properly if it's bent just the wrong way by chance. IF I'm right (and I can't say for sure, I know just enough about electronica to be dangerous) it may be that your scanner is not well at all.

When my old one died it just gave up all at once - no power, no nothin'.
At least it went quickly, poor thing.

I know nothing about computers save for how to install games haha so what your saying makes since. I've only been using it since may and its a epson which I herd was good but yeah..its only half working atm like one side is all color crazed and the other is ok (was never perfect but now its messed up) Gonna have to buy a new one I think :(

Before you buy a new scanner, check your warranty ... the scanner company may have a warranty on the unit, and if it's only a few months old they may be able to help out (aka repair or replace it)
