Wow! That's a crazy awesome level of improvement between the two pieces! Seems like you've really taken some big strides into advancing your painting style, lighting techniques, and taking on the challenge of background and composition! Kudos to you, sir! Well, if I can serve as a motivator for you, then by all means. It's not bad to have a little bit of competitive drive. Just don't beat yourself up over it, because everybody's circumstances are different, especially with learning, and even having time for it. The only person you should truly be competing against is yourself. At least, that's what keeps me sane when I see someone with a level of art that I aspire towards.
