Background: Student of Street Magic

Rook lived in city slums for most of his young life with a foster family of fellow orphans and guardians. One of these guardians, Mert, was a disgraced warlock who took a liking to him, and passed down some of his arcane knowledge to help him thrive on the streets. Rook was an exceptional student, and Mert took it upon himself to help him make a pact with the Fiend, Relch, whom he made a pact with. They cleared their family out of the house and went into the cellar to prepare the ritual.

Relch unfortunately had other plans. Frustrated with Mert's misused of power (for he has scarcely done evil), he perceives such a young whelp asking for his power insult to injury. Relch posses Rook and exploits his talent to balance out the benevolence Mert bestowed upon the world. The pact he made was nullified and Relch creates a path of destruction. He went about the slums slaughtering people and pillaging their houses. But Rook, after watching his body rip people to shreds, flairs his will out and catches the Fiend in a bind. Relch was caught unaware just enough to be expunged by Mert. Vulnerable, demoralized, he braces himself for destruction at the hands of a livid fiend. What he gets, however, is his pact reciprocated. He and Mert look at the scene around them and realizes the city guards have arrived after the commotion. Mert uses the last of his illusion cantrips to conceal Rook, and instructs him to wait until night to flee the city. Mert turns himself in. Rook has since been moving from city to city, trying to distance himself from the rumors.
