Subnautica Redesign: Sea Dragon Leviathan
Redesign of the Sea Dragon Leviathan from the game Subnautica. Uploading this to show the type of creature design I do, and my philosophy in their creation.
A lot of things bugged me about the sea dragon; very little in its design seemed consistent with the information given about the creature. Most of the changes I have made intend to reflect that. Most importantly, the lower half of this leviathan looked like it had gone through a paper shredder in the last stage of design - the body tapering very thin just after the bulk of the chest and splitting into slim, non webbed tentacles. This looked a bit ridiculous to me considering the size and supposed power of this creature, thus I have given it a more sturdy and muscular body in general. Limbs were shortened and beefed up - no more noodle arms. It's diet of swift, eel-like creatures seemed inconsistent with the dull and spaced out teeth, which have been changed into inward-pointed razors. Overall I think I have kept the creatures general feel while enhancing the believability of its anatomy and consistency with given lore. I have mostly been inspired by the liopleurodon, dimetrodon and marine iguana.

I think the tentacles might have just been a way to reinforce the "alien" look. The reaper leviathan, for example, has a long wormlike body mixed with the large mandibles in its face, making it look alien. The ghost leviathan looks very alien due to being partly transparent... And then they have this, giant lizard, essentially. It's far more generic (godzilla anyone?) and not necessarily aquatic. Solution: make it a lizardsquid, now it looks alien.
That said, i like this redesign, it looks a lot more fitting to its lore and kind of more menacing.

I totally agree with you - to me it looks as if they slapped some tentacles on a lizard and called it a day. But considering that they did the exact same thing for the Emperor leviathan (ending up with the two most late-game creature having, essentially, the same body/shape), I felt a need to further differentiate them. It's true that it ended up looking a bit more like a monster hunter beast than a subnautica alien, though I think it was a necessary sacrifice.
