This is a 'hell guardian', a species of guard dog-type beast bred to keep fallen angels in line. The smell of anything holy drives them mad, but makes them appear very affectionate and sweet, which makes them all the more dangerous. This is why they have their eyes sewn shut at birth, and are usually kept muzzled.

A primitive species was reportedly used in the Great War by the rebel angels.
