Oh I'm a dog person as well...but I also have cats. For some reason the cats just come more naturally to me. Although I suppose I can trace the roots to the ability to draw cats back to when the Lion King came out. I drew A LOT of the characters from that...
Personality wise I enjoy dogs because they tend to be pleasers :) Cats could careless generally.

I think it's just because they have been around us for so long. I can take my dog pretty much anywhere and he's the most chill thing...unless ppl ignore him. Then he starts to get sad and his head and tale will start to droop. Then he looks pathetic and then ppl pay attention to him. I think it's just an act :p
