Firsuiting
Or, 'How I spent my summer vacation.' I spent most of August hiking around Glacier National Park in Montana doing fieldwork toward my eventual dissertation. I'm studying alpine treeline, so pictured here is a typical day of hard scientific work for me. I'm standing on my head in a patch of krummholz (horizontal growth form that trees get forced into by snow at the treeline) trying to get soil samples and measure basal diameters of stems. It's generally a rather undignified job that leaves one covered in subalpine fir needles and sap while trying frantically to juggle too many bits of equipment and contorting into awkward positions.
But it's all for science!!! Right?

*laughs and nods* Yep! I blame your encouragement largely for the fact that the idea took hold enough that I ended up doing it. ;D And yeah it does look a bit like I crashed! Felt like it most of the time too... Also yes, subalpine fir would make a VERY nice nesting material for a mountain cave, a fact which I intend to remember. Just don't make a mistake and grab spruce instead. *shudders and flattens ears*
