Ah, a pleasant day in the countryside. Just ignore the hundreds of contrails overhead and the oily smoke cloud on the horizon from some crashed aircraft. This is a scene I imagine was all too common throughout Europe and the British Isles during the WWII.
The reason for doing this piece was to test and verify some ideas I had before I tried them on
abakan commission. One, I wanted to certain that I would be able to create the contrails on the same type bristol board I plan to use for his picture. Two, I wanted to get more practice at doing smoky, oily, mechanical thing burning fire/ smoke. Three, I wanted to firm up my color palette for the picture. Would these combinations of colors give me the effect I'm looking for. For the most part the answer on all counts was yes. Now for the most part I can move on to finalizing the final B/W drawing.

Oh the made them! Lots of them. There numerous photos from the Second World War with skies of Europe appearing to be literally trapped inside a giant spider web. Hundreds and hundreds of contrails. Thousands of souls locked in deadly combat against the vaults of heaven!
OT, but one of my uncles was in England furing the prep for D-Day. Once he and his buds were on a bus going through the countryside around London, and all of a sudden the bus stopped and they get told to "Get out and get your face in the dirt NOW!"
He ran out and dived together with everyone else... but he glanced up and saw this silvery 'cigar' flying overhead. It arced and then came down somewhere near London together with a loud explosion. (It was a V-1.)
After they got back on the bus he tried telling the guys what he'd seen, they all laughed at him: "What, rockets? G'wan that stuff is from Buck Rogers!"
