Already seeing improvements on your work. Although, the midtone between the light and dark areas is generally advised against, as it can screw with depth perception and cause the shape of the character to be misconstrued, however, if you just use short dashes/dots of it, you can achieve an anti-aliased look without making the computer do it for you, which can really improve the overall look of it.
