Here is a reference of pern, the poodle Fern. He is the pet of fellow plant hybrid, Lilac.

Like Lilac, his fur is actually leaves. Also like Lilac, he can grow them however he wants. Though since he is just a dog, he doesn't quite have the mental capacity to always understand what he is doing as far as his leaves and coat.

While Lilac prefers direct sunlight, Pern prefers indirect sunlight. While the two are outside sunning themselves, pern will usually have a little doggie shade over him.
