Partly because my son prefers him male and partly because there are apparently LOADS of stretchy girl heroes on dA (plus, people were, well, just getting the wrong idea about my intentions for the character), I decided to restore my flagship superhero since the mid-90's, The Mighty Goo, to male-hood. Male-ness. Male-osity. Whatever.
Besides, I realized that while I have a metric buttload of strong female characters, I only really have one or two male characters strong enough to stand on their own, and Goo here is one of them.
Strange thing, this sketch came after an epiphany yesterday, when I realized that, in light of all the shit heaped upon my life since the new millennium, I'd flat out forgotten how to have fun, which might very well be the true cause of my art block.
After all, why be a cartoonist if you aren't having fun being one..?
So, while meditating one this around the middle of the night, trying to recapture in my head and heart what was fun about my drawing, this picture emerged. Makes sense, really; I first created Goo as a rebellion against the 90's "Dark Age" characters, in an attempt to create a character that was like the comics I used to love.
So...we'll see where this goes. I'm tired of fighting my art block...I just want to have some fun now.

Yeah we Dark Agers say the same thing about the Sliver Age and four-colors with it's happy-go-lucky heroes, prisons that suck at doing their job*, and villians that want to hold the world at ransom with a ludicrously constructed deathray prototype.
Dark Age had it's shortcomings but it was still a stepping stone to better comicbook storytelling.
*Seriously, why are all the prisons in a Silver Age verse as effective as rice paper?
