:D A photo from last year's summer vacation to see the eclipse in North Carolina that I sort of put into reserve until I could identify the fungi for sure... And it's a Scleroderma citrinum, a member of the earthball group which looks superficially like edible puffballs. However, earthballs have a black spore mass inside and are mildly toxic!
The easy way to tell the difference, at a look, is the surface. Puffball species can have anything from powdery stuff, little regular soft spikes, to little regular bumps on their overall smooth exteriors, while earthballs tend to have rough, shaggy scales and other structures. Also, earthballs are rarely ever the lily-white fresh color of the puffball, usually more beige or yellowish to start off with.
Photo was take in August in the wilderness area next to the Glade Valley B&B, so you're definitely not going to be seeing these out at the time of posting. XD Whoops.
