Rise to the Challenge—by Quinn
As Alistair finished reading the inscription on the pedestal, we heard an incredibly loud thump behind us and turned around to a horrifying sight. A boulder nearly twice my ten-foot height in diameter had somehow dropped into the corridor atop the slope at the other end, and it rolled toward us at great speed. The acolytes grouped into a formation as if ready to confront this challenge head on, but several of us panicked: Alistair huddled against the far end of the corridor and Pick fled through a doorway, whereupon he played his usual melody that caused courage to well up within us.
I do not mean to boast, but Caden and I somehow found ourselves ready to take action well before the magical courage struck us. In an instant I was upon Bigby, snatching at his neck to connect our pendants to release the enlarging magic within. Because of the enhanced speed Alistair's alchemy and the rivière [of permanent transmutation] had gifted me, I charged into the boulder before my magical growth finished. My shoulder connected with it as I continue to grow, and the steadily increasing strength I exerted upon it, the force of Caden's psychokinesis, and the aid of Bigby's strength (once his shock at the sudden events wore off) brought the deadly trap to a stop.
Thinking back on the teamwork we exhibited in that moment, the extra courage Pick bestowed, the feeling that my bond with Bigby played a part in this accomplishment, and the realization of my own titanic strength… all of these things made me appreciate the monster I have become. I was a necessary part of a team of close friends, and while I will certainly continue to perfect my transformation magic in the hopes of using my old body sometimes, I knew in that moment that there was nothing wrong with my urge to continue growing stronger, more bestial, more monstrous, and more draconic. These traits, combined with my own will, let me be the hero I want to be. They turn my identity of "Gargantua" into a name that means more than "leaving my puny kobold life behind"; it comes to mean that I embrace the change from kobold to colossus, awaiting a further metamorphosis. They turn my link to the Golem arcanum into more than "one who mindlessly serves"; it comes to mean that I have the power to protect. Most importantly of all, my link to the Hanged Man arcanum no longer means "one defined by indecision", as my will to protect has become pure instinct.
I am Gargantua of Highfolk. I am no longer a kobold. I am no longer innocent. I am a ten-foot, hulking monster. And I will continue to train, grow, and change, resolute in my urge to be a hero.
This is a picture of the fourteenth in-game day of my current Pathfinder campaign with DM
Bomba, and players
MonsterMutt,
Serophous,
Marshtomphappy,
CaitSith and
Quinn. While navigating corridors deep underneath a temple connecting the surface of the idyllic Island of Truth to the lost city of Lultria underground, we were forced to confront a boulder trap. DM Bomba gave us five real-world minutes to state how we would handle the problem, and while Marshy, Quinn, and I had immediate plans for character actions, most of the time was spent joking around or clarifying the situation. With time short, I opted to take action without group approval while Marshy and Quinn enacted their plans as well.
Granted, all of this was followed by DM Bomba essentially saying "Oh, !@#$, I didn't think you all would actually stop it," after which he had the boulder resume rolling anyway so that his NPCs could show off their power. We just don't mention that part. :3
You can follow up on the latest events in the campaign as written by Lank/Gargantua here. This campaign captivates me more with every session that passes because of the intense character development that us players willingly undergo and that Bomba facilitates.
