A clouded leopard practicing her swordplay in a rainshower...
I'm rather fascinated with Ancient China, and the artistic cinematography in Hong Kong kung fu movies set in Ancient China, such as "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", and "Hero" - which provided inspiration for this piece.
I also wanted to really have a setting that felt real - that felt like the character was really immersed in the setting - using lighting, perspective, and the rain to unify the piece.
This was a difficult piece for me, but also a very fulfilling one, in the challenges I posed for myself. I think it is too early for me to really say how well I did at those challenges, but I think it was definately worthwhile, and I'm proud of it =).

Ever heard of the video game "Legend of Kay"? Your picture here looks like it must have come directly from the game. :D

This came out sooo beautifully. I wish I had more to say about it, something a bit more constructive, but I can't really think of anything but endless praise about the way the cloth folds, the lighting on her sword, the water droplets striking her and the ground... it all came out so wonderfully. You really did succeed at making the character look immersed in the background, here. I'm quite impressed.
Thank you =D.. I tried to create something I would love to hang on my wall, hoping others would feel the same way =). It makes it a little harder to part with it, but it was intended for the FC show, and so it shall be.

You know I don't comment often, but I had to, over this piece. It is an exceptional rendering - and allowing your watchers to see it 'come together' was very generous of you. It was fascinating to watch you progress.
Well done. All the aspects you mention in your description (lighting, perspective, and the rain) are beautifully meshed. Exceptional work, you should be very proud indeed!

Thanks so much!
I think posting the WIPs was helpful to myself as well - as it allowed me to take a break from the piece, and to look at it in a new light when I came back to it later. Its amazing how different the piece looks when I am working on it horizonatlly, and when it is scanned and displayed vertically on my monitor. Sometimes all it takes is a change of angle for errors to become apparent.
I think I will be posting more WIPs for future ambitious pieces =).

"Crouching Tiger, Soggy Leopard"...? ;)
And I thought the WIPs were good... this is mindbogglingly excellent! I think it might be the best one of your pics that I've ever seen. The rain dripping from various parts of her anatomy, the folds of wet cloth, the backlighting, they're all spot-on.

^^ No problem! {snuggles you lots} ^^ that's great, then. ^^
Watercolors are! - it just happens that I'm really anal when it comes to paper (Barnes & Noble 8.5 x 11" sketchbook; black cover, says 'sketchbook' on the front, $10 bucks for this beautiful paper that can take a beating with markers and colored pencils combined, no grain whatsoever, hardly any smudge...), and I tend to get really watery with my watercolors. >_<"

This may sound greedy, but...
On a RPG board thread, we are creating 'motivational posters.' And... this picture would go perfectly with a Jadeclaw theme. ^^;
With your permission, may I use this picture to make a (online-only) poster? The image would be shrunk down a little, but your attribution would remain.

Hmm... I don't ordinarily allow alterations to be made directly to my images, though I do allow my watermarked images to be freely distributed...
I think I would need to know what the motivational poster would say, and look like, before I could say whether I would approve of its display, or not...
Thank you for asking =)

Very well done, I like how the water effect came off on the subject. They only question I have is the tassel on the sword. If she's not making an upswing motion its going against the wind, if not its perfect due to how the tassel looks to have just lost momentum and has the look of being pushed back by the wind and rain.^^
For me, it's definitely the lighting that ties the character to the scene... The way the warm light from the building reflects off of her is incredible. Also can't believe how well you pulled off the rain; it has a strong presence but doesn't distract from the final image. Good sense of motion as well, in the edges of her clothing, the drips from the sword, her tail and the tassel. Just amazing..
If I could just make a suggestion . . . depending on how much time she'd been out in the rain, the tassles on the sword and her clothes would not be as light and swinging. The tassles would probably be stuck together and swing more heavily, and the lower part of her shirt would be stuck to her inner thigh, for example. I know, picky, but her tail looked pretty soaked, so it was just something that jumped out at me for future reference. :)
Beautiful!
Your work has been good for a long time now, but your recent efforts have moved from strength to strength, improving all the while. In terms of lighting, texture, dynamism and composition, this might very well be the best picture I have seen from you... and I look forward to seeing what else you can do in the years to come.

I'll have to agree with most everyone here that this is probably one of your best "Atmospheric" images yet. I especially liked how you handled the subtle textures of wet fur, stone and even the character's silken robes. The reflections in the sword add a gleam of menace to the image that's countered by the character's "Delicate" pose.
Sure! I'll let you grab a print =) Email me at kacey[at]otonashi.net - they are $10 each plus shipping
Is this a painting or a photo ?!
j/k
But really Kacey, Their is nothing that can truelly discribe work like this.
You have a very Rare Gift; I don't think I've ever seen such beautiful art in my life, None of these so called 'masters' of art even come close to your level of skill.
You Totally Pwn Leo. And thats straight up no foolings.

I've been watching the progress of this piece as you have been posting it. I am totally impressed with the use of color and light reflection, hmmm, you know what it reminds me off? The use of the warm color and the blue?
Old fashioned christmas cards, with the light of shop windows warmly playing onto snow and people.
I think you have done a wonderful job with this work and I can't help but feel intensely jealous of your skill ;)
Snugs to you from Damoclien

I think its really cool that you are reminded of Christmas cards. I used the warm and cool color scheme for pretty much the same reason the Christmas cards probably used it - the warmth versus the cold - I hoped it would accentuate the coldness of the rain and therefore the intensity at which she practices her craft.. =)

I also have been following your WIPs.
This is utterly gorgeous. I wish I had such control and manipulation of colour and light. I love how you nailed the reflection on everything.
The colouring of the fur is stunning and realistic.
The only thing that strikes me as a little off is the way the water strikes the ground in the background. It looks like a pool of water. Unless it's meant to look like a pool of water.
Can I ask how you did the rain?
Oh and how large is this?

The water in the background is supposed to look as if it has collected an inch or two above the dirt - and so the raindrops are rippling on the surface =) So a very shallow pool, yes.
The rain is white acrylic - and I started by looking at the surfaces and determining which surfaces would be dripping, and which surfaces would have splash impacts - the roof in the background has a lot of dripping, and also impacts - the statue has dripping, impacts, and water trails - the character has lots of impacts, and the dripping is mostly coming off the tail and the sword, with some dripping from her clothing and face... The impacts on the ground were either splashes, or ripples, or both, depending on how much water had collected. The stones in the foreground are above the waters surface, but inbetween the stones is pooled water. After all the water effects on the objects and character had been put in, I decided on an angle for the falling rain, and tried to duplicate it throughout the piece. There is the most falling rain visible in the sky and distant background, because there is the most atmospheric space between the viewer and those areas, as compared to in front of the temple, where there is comparatively less falling rain.
Something really important to making the scene look wet is that everything wet is highly reflective, also.
I've been struggling with water effects for a really long time, so I thought about all this a long time =). Its not perfect, but it seems to work okay =)
The size of the original is 11"x14"

Wow.. wow I say :D It was awesome see this unfold and now that it's done, it's just all the more awesome! The figure is just fantastic, her stoic and concentrated look with her strong, steady pose. The rain effects look so cool and I love how it adds so much dimension and atmosphere to the painting. I think my favorite part is either her wet tail, or more likely her raised arm that's almost silhouetted against the sky.
As you may know I am a technical artist with years of experience in perspective, multiple elevation presentation, detailing etc...
From the beginning this piece has had my attention because it demonstrates that furry artists can do technical art if they put their minds to it. This picture and the last one show that you have definate skills in that area.
I am just wondering if you have had any training or schooling in technical or mechanical art ?

Every little detail is so perfectly exquisite, feeding life into the scene as the light and undertones bathe it in a surreal aura... a moment of dreamlike fantasy as viewed with astonishing clarity. One of the best anthropomorphic works I have seen, and truly magnificent to behold.
Now this pic is, without a doubt, one of my favourite pics of furry art that I've ever seen. I'm very fond of the oriental settings and the artistic cinematography in Asia. I've actually begun writing a new series with an oriental setting and this piece really epitomizes what I'm going for. The look, the feel, the entire composition is astounding. Fantastic job, Kacey :)
Even with all the new stuff I found here in your gallery compared to DA, this is still my top favorite. I think this displays a fantastic array of skill you have in the traditional media.
One would have to be the highly attractive folds in the clothing and awesome live feeling of seeing the rain hitting the ground. ^^ Incredible this is traditional.

http://RogueAshaman.deviantart.com/.....Sword-59299684 Like the hook sword, but then the blade is shorter and the hook isn't a hook, though still a bit curved. And the guard on the hilt would still be the same.
And another one of my favorite weapons china has: The 7 piece chain whip, or the meteor hammer or rope dart ^_^"
