ANTHRO X
“So, what do we do now?”, my words broke the steady silence, we had not spoken a word since the inception of the idea of literally changing the world.
I was looking for another move, something to keep my mind positive and to ignore the numbing frozen world we now resided in. I was motivated, eager to start and ready to put my new life into the path of a greater meaning.
“Oh, so eager?” she teased with a smug smile and I nodded. “After all you’ve been through; the heartache, the pain, and the sickness – nearly dying on that wasted ball of a planet you once called home, why don’t you rest some? We have time…”
“You don’t understand – I want nothing more than to make this work, to have a home again. I will either succeed or die trying, I want my life to have meaning and I am not one to let time just slip on by. Our lives are short, and we often take it for granted…why not use the little time we have to make a big difference, to put it towards something for a greater good…for the future?”
“…You are strong, Ray.” She said sincerely, “But just know it’s better to have had and lost then to have never had to begin with…”
Her words seemed to lose their strength, as if she was falling, slipping away from the light. “What do you mean?” I asked curious.
After a brief hesitation she said lowly, “I never had a home…I never even knew my parents. All my life I’ve been upon that ship, all that I remember. This planet doesn’t even seem like home to me, though I hope one day it will. Like you, I’ve just been pushing my way through life, doing what I can to hide the pain, and to hide away that fact that never occurred to me until I’ve met you – I have no home…I am a nomad.”
My heart sank, she was right…at least I could hold onto the vague positive memories of what was. For her, there was nothing…nothing but that damn ship and her medical training. “So, how did you get there? On the ship I mean?”
“I was born there, in the maternity ward; all I know is when I was a kit, I opened my eyes for the first time to find I was in a room full of newborns. With strange faces that I never familiarized with, that I never knew or could call a mother or father. Instead I became part of a community of others; a crew. Through the years I was taught by others and had to take care of myself. Once I became of age, I had to decide on what to do with my life, and I chose to become a doctor, to learn under the supervision and lead of the medical officer who has now since passed, whose position I now fill the gap for.”
“I’m…sorry,” I placed a paw upon her shoulder reassuringly.
“Don’t be…I’ve come to accept it and move on. That’s all we can do in this life…if you wish to pursue this I am with you. I’ve never had someone I can connect so deeply with – until you. For the first time, I found someone I can call ‘family’.”
My heart was in a knot, that familiar emotion bearing down on me like weight upon my chest. “Perhaps…we can rest for a little bit. Then by morning we can decide on what to do.” I said.
“Sounds like a plan to me, it seems this storm is beginning to ease up, the rain has stopped and should be safe to go outside now.”
“What other weather phenomena should I need to worry about while here?”
With a slight exhalation that could be passed for a laugh, she simply shook her head, “that’s it…just the cold and rain; not much else occurs here, not even snow”.
“Or thunderstorms? Hurricanes? Tornadoes? Anything else”.
“Nope…at least not until the atmospheric conditions change – when we change it; make it warmer. The ammonic rain happens regularly, but when it does simply take cover anywhere you can. The residents here primarily being autonomous are rather welcoming and friendly towards the makers – the beings who made them, us.” She said.
A thought crossed my mind, about what happened that day on Earth, when I felt like my life was slipping away. “Abigale…is there any chance that sickness will come back? Being exposed to the conditions here or places I don’t know about? Or was that a once in a lifetime occurrence?”
“No, it is possible for it to happen again…your sensitivity to radiation is what transpires the reaction. If I were you I’d steer clear of the ‘rift’.”
“The rift?” I tilted my head.
“Yes, it is a large ravine just north of here which traverses the landscape, dividing the mountains. It travels deep into the planet and exposes its molten magnetic core, and within, it’s more volatile compounds. See here?” she brought up a dynamic hologram of the rift upon her PES, the area within 5 miles of either side of the rift is riddled with emissions.”
“So, this sensitivity…is lifelong?” I asked not truly wanting to know the answer.
“…yes…unfortunately it is, Ray. A condition that must be marked to indicate your vulnerability before you can join in any corps within ANTHRO or any other research organizations. Everyone who has any medical history or conditions which may be seen as an impact on one’s inclusion or commitments of any project under ANTHRO, are subject to a symbolic marking – for the betterment of the functionality and efficiency of the community.”
“What does that mean entirely?” I asked confused.
“In short, you must get a tattoo or other form of marking to show that you are sensitive to radiation; doing so allows others to see your vulnerability and you don’t get tossed into a situation which could be hazardous for you, or where your vulnerability could be an asset.”
“Oh…I see”
“I’ve already got you and your sensitivity on file, so everyone on the ship can look up your record and see it. Though it just makes it easier on us all if we can take one glance at you and see, without having to go digging into your file. There’s a place here in town which does marking, I’ll mark it on your PES system so you may find it easier, on your own time feel free to venture there to have it done, but just know it MUST be done before we can do anything, otherwise the corps will not let you participate in this project.”
“Well then, I guess I better get it done then if we are to start asap. Get some rest Abigale, I shall return soon,” I said giving her a kiss.
I stepped back outside into the cold, where this new suit seemed to really work well, the sharp sting of the below freezing air was not so debilitating as I followed the coordinates she marked within my PES.
It took a good 10 minutes or so before I reached my destination, a small quaint building nestled within a small alleyway. Stepping inside, I called for the owner of the place, but no answer came. The place seemed desolate, but once a shift in movement reached my ears, it occurred to me I was not alone.

My submission and newest installment of the ongoing story for the
Thursday_Prompt
this week's prompt was inspired by the word: Occurrence.
I missed out on the last two prompts as I hit writer's block and could not formulate a good story with the previous prompts which I felt would still tie into the story. But this week I managed to make it work ^^
This story leads up to another pinnacle point of Ray's story, which will soon be able to reveal his identity in visual form! ^^ And soon I plan on getting some artwork with him done which correlates to his story - how exciting!
Hope you guys enjoy this week's entry and thank you all for whom have followed along! :)
