A gallery forest is the thin line of trees growing on either side of a stream or river.
Kabiaski’s Gallery Forest Drake
———————————————
Can dislocate jaw.
They are very prehensile creatures!
Has a pouch(both sexes).
toe claw on hind.
Mane and tail(primarily on male, nonexistent to nearly nonexistent on female).
Seasonal horns growing in pairs comparable to goat at first, then Ibex as they grow (1g, 1i1g, 2i, 2i1g, 3i, 3i1g, 4i, 4i1g--more ibex horns the rarer and later in season it is. Four large pair of horns and one small is legendary. Any beyond that is a drunken tavern tale)
Males have facial whiskers.
Scales along spine run counter to other scales on body.
Light phase: gold and brown
Dark phase: dark silver-blue and graphite.
Covering: 1/8-1/4" long, thin, microfine scales(looks like fur at a glance, feels like suede, but equally as hard as dragon scales. With the grain feels soft and smooth. Against it will shred skin and leave splinters.).
Body is endothermic.
Size is variable and depends on mood of animal.
Height: 17.5"-34.5" at shoulder
Length:
Torso: 15"-30"
Tail: 18"-36"
Head&neck: 14.5"-29"
Circumf:
21"-42"-chest
16.5"-33"-waist
Stance and locomotion are more like a genet when smaller and more like a coyote/maned wolf when larger.
Will change size and color according to mood and environment.
Will change color according to mood and lighting.
If surprised it will emit a burst of scalding hot acid from a pair of thin tubes located at the jaw at its attacker before fleeing.
Solitary most of the time save for mating season where the male stays until the young can move about on their own. Thought to be monogamous they typically try and find the mate they had last time, however research shows that many males have different females they visit in a larger area with the females having a smaller territory contained within the larger males. If a male dies females have been known to go up to eleven years without mating, though 3-5 is average. Young males out on their own for the first time may briefly form small packs.
While they are quiet most of the time vocalizations include: soft low rumbling noises(primarily by males to attract females or to get them receptive), trills and chirrups(friendly or begging noise), growls and crocodile like hisses(threat warning), growl-barks(to alert someone a ways away they can be seen and should either announce themselves in kind or leave depending on who or what it is), a sharp, high pitched 'Yait!'(surprise or pain), whining, or whimpering (fear, doubt, uncertainty) short midrange vocalizations from the throat(really enjoying something), a combination growl-hiss (frustration, being foiled, or prevented from obtaining something, persistence), this can lead to the combination growl-whine if they are repeatedly thwarted and may have to reluctantly give up; and a series of soft, quick grunts not unlike a human laughing to themselves (pleasure, contentment, a calming effort or nervousness)
Diet: Highly curious-and destructive- opportunistic feeders. 40% Fish, crustaceans, small vertebrates, and eggs 50% fruit, seeds, nuts, grains, remainder is leaves and grasses, and the occasional insect.
Prefers to hunt by stalk and ambush.
They have been falsely accused of going after horses and cattle; a group may take down a goat or sheep but such events are rare. They have been known to wreak havoc in a henhouse.
They have a sweet tooth and will go after honey and scratch maple trees to get at the sap. Young wyrms will often overindulge, regret it--nausea, diarrhea, sweats, tachycardia, tremors, excruciating light and sound sensitive headaches--then do it again. Older ones will indulge occasionally and not eat to excess.
There are as many accounts of them consuming dairy as there are accounts of their lactose intolerance.
Ecology: Temperate zone. Grasslands or lightly forested areas. Usu. near creek or small pond. May migrate or hibernate.
Gestation: live born but underdeveloped. Gestation is 4.5 to nearly six months. Typically 2-4 young born either cosmic latte or eigengrau colored depending upon various factors and circumstances.
Full development at 9 months
Scales remain soft and pliable up to 9-10 months.
Capable of independence by 1 year.
Stays with mother for 1-2 years.
Males typically leaving in 1.5 years females staying behind another year or so often helping the mother with the latest litter.
Sexual maturity reached at two years of age.
Lifespan is typically 25-30+ years not accounting for disease, predation et. al. One individual in captivity reached 40.
Mammary glands located inside pouch. Pouch has a contracting muscle to keep it closed that allows either parent to run and move about with offspring or whatever else(they have been known to carry whatever strikes their fancy.).
In captivity breeding programs are notoriously difficult and even in the wild it can take a few days of being in each others company before both feel up to the task.
They usually sleep in dens which more often than not are modified dens of other animals such as may be found in some tree roots, in a fallen log, or between two stones. If needed they can dig their own though prefer to just find one. They can have up to 8-10 different denning sites that they rotate to randomly to reduce the chance of predation. Those without a den may scratch a depression or 'couch' into the ground, then may or may not cover this in whatever is available nearby then burrow under it.
Chocolate and Caffeine has powerful mood and perception altering qualities and is highly addictive putting the draconid in a state of relaxed euphoria. Also acts as a bowel evacuant and muscle relaxant. Old world draconids seem especially susceptible whereas new world ones experience little to no effect. Farmers of such crops consider them a pest and will trap, poison and shoot them. An equally effective and kinder way is to play harsh, disagreeable noises; however traps and bullets are cheaper than wiring a stereo system through 800 acres.
Church bells have been found to be a highly effective deterrent. Because of this, their serpent like qualities and the male's satanic looking horns they were hunted to near extinction in the Middle Ages. They are currently listed as endangered but their status is improving.
Can climb trees but will only do so if absolutely necessary as getting back down can be awkward and nerve wracking. Swimming ability is no better or worse than any other land creature though they seem to hate getting wet.
Running speed is 45-50mph at largest size. Bursts of up to 55mph have been reported but are unsubstantiated.
Seems attracted to and susceptible to music or any rhythmic and/or melodic sound. Even the rhythmic hum of an idling motor or an HVAC unit can draw their interest and attention.
Mostly Immune to venom and will hunt and eat venomous snakes.
If one is caught and you're firm with strong resolve yet gentle, patient and providing, they can eventually be tamed, even domesticated though a special license is required and it can take quite a few years. Careful though, they do shed those skin shredding scales. Daily scraping and moisturizing is needed to minimize this risk.
Much like declawing, the removal of the acid glands is a highly controversial argument with devout proponents in both camps.
Coffee and chocolate can be used for training though care must be taken to do so sparingly. The pharmacological effects have not been studied fully and withdrawal symptoms may cause the wyrm to be agitated and aggressive and destroy anything between them and their treats. This has in the past included owners or anyone else standing in the way. There are herbal tisanes that can lessen the severity of the addiction even to the point where it could ignore a whole pile laying right next to it but one taste and the desire comes back twice as hard. Doses of 6-20 oz must be given 1-3x daily; Some of the more effective types can be hard to convince the wyrm to swallow. Due to the difficulties and dangers most experienced owners use fruits, playtime, or even music instead. However commercial coffee-chocolate treats and foods last quite awhile and are-- although rather difficult to find and pricier than dog or cat food--cheaper to buy. There are regulations stating how much can be added and that the bag must contain a warning label but some companies will make the label tiny and obscure or falsify amounts then claim it must be because your wyrm really likes the product.
Lilacs, wether ingested or smelled by these wyrms, have been shown to be poisonous resulting in headaches, dizziness, nausea, lethargy, brachycardia, coma, and death.
They are notoriously finicky eaters and prefer a wide variety with nothing overprocessed or artificial.
Hearing is quite excellent.
Sense of smell is equal to a cats.
Vision is comparable to a humans and they have a tapetum lucedum enabling night vision.
Taste sense is very well developed. This along with their sense of smell and their memory has saved many after attempting to eat any poisonous plants.
These Wyrms have a well developed vameronasal organ.
Smell, sound, and taste seem to be key in finding and attracting a mate.
Common ailments of elderly wyrms are:
Mental deterioration, arthritis, tendonitis, knee and joint ailments, hip dysplasia, loss of sense of smell, easily irritated digestive system, a deterioration of the tapetum lucidum resulting in night blindness, low blood pressure, low cardiovascular stress tolerance.
Intelligence is hard to discern but they have shown surprising learning and problem solving skills if they need or want something; otherwise they seem oblivious. This can make training difficult if they discover an easier way to get more of what they want rather than the way you want them to.
While human quality food is highly recommended for your drake here is a small list of foods that are safe, unsafe, or should be fed in restricted quantities:

Culinary herbs and spices, tisanes, meat
In moderation: Dairy, watermelon, citrus , honey, maple, beer(1-3 wk 10%abv or less, 1500 ml max), wine(3-4oz 1x wk), salt/salty foods.
Avoid: coffee*, chocolate*, tea, radishes, bivalves, tofu, mushrooms, avocado, lilacs, cabbage, cauliflower, iceberg lettuce, boiled or overcooked greens.
(*older publications may list these as in moderation. Avoid any that state they are safe.)

When large, movement and stance is more like a coyote or maned wolf's.
May be larger to easier see across grasslands, be more visible to a mate, or for intimidation.
When small movement and stance is more like a genet or ocelot.
May be small to be in an area of crowded trees. To sneak up on something, or to hide from a predator.
Light phase may be used to hide in grass, or while in the daytime.
Dark phase for hiding in shadowed areas, or at night.
Sometimes they'll use a contrasting phase to their environment to make them more visible to other wyrms, and unfortunately anything that might be hunting them.
This is done primarily by the males much like the bright colors of a bird. Females have been known to do so too but not with the blatancy of the males and typically if they see one nearby looking for it and desire to attract their attention. An involuntary change to a contrasting color scheme to their environment in females who are in heat has been recorded when they see, smell, or hear a male in the vicinity. This referred to by some as a flush, the flush, or flushing
More on vocalizations:
vocalizations include: soft low rumbling noises(primarily by males to attract females or to get them receptive),
This is similar to the deep base rumble a bull crocodile/alligator will use under a female to get her more in the mood.
trills and chirrups(friendly or begging noise)
Much like the trills and rolled R meows or "Errau"s of a cat.
growl-barks(to alert someone a ways away they can be seen and should either announce themselves in kind or leave depending on who or what it is),
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oBSGEl-yB7A
short midrange vocalizations from the throat(really enjoying something),
This is similar to the "ahh ooh oh"s a dog may give when you're scratching the exact right spot.
The exact nature of how it can change its coat coloration is unclear to scientists. Some theorize that tiny muscles shift the scales slightly to catch and bend the light in a different way, still others claim underlying skin pigment changes and this can be seen through the crystal like scale-hairs as the refracting light draws the color up through the scales.
How it changes size is completely unknown.
