Felina was flying. She was returning home. It had been an exhausting day, and she couldn't help but long for her bed to curl up on. She worked at the docks, moving containers from ship to dock, dock to ship. Most of the workers there were males, but she didn't care. It paid well, and that's all she cared about.
It started to rain. Felina groaned. Great. Now she was wet as well. She had heard it'll rain today, but she didn't expect it to rain so soon. Cuss her home for being so far away from the docks. Felina beat her wings, flying just a bit faster. She was already exhausted, and didn't want to exhaust herself more than necessary. She just wanted to go home, wash, see her hatchlings, curl up, and sleep.
About an hour later in the rain, Felina reached her home. She was drenched, and very, very tired. By now, a full on thunder storm was raging outside. Felina dug through her bag, pulled out the key, and opened the door and walked in after shaking herself. She threw her bag on the counter, and headed straight to the bathroom. Felina turned the knob of the hot water, and turned a bit on the cold water, making it warm. Felina stood in the bliss, enjoying the warm water pouring on her. Once all the rain water washed off and she felt clean, she turned off the water and stepped out of the bathroom after drying off. She walked over to her room, and checked on her hatchlings. They were already sleeping. Looking at them lovingly, she tucked her hatchlings in, and laid down beside them. Sleep soon overcame her, and she drifted into a deep sleep.
########
‘Get that container here, Felina! Here!’ a supervisor yelled at her, waving at a vacant spot between stacks of containers. It was raining harder today, and it was hard to see. She squinted her eyes, saw the spot the supervisor was pointing at. She beat her wings, eager to get the weight off her, and set the container down at the pointed place. She unchained the container, flapped back into the air, and went to get the next container assigned to her. The faster she did all the work, the faster she could get back home. As she went home late yesterday, and as it was raining today as well, she was extremely eager to get back home early today. She wanted to spent time with her hatchlings, and plus, it was Friday. If she got home early today, she could have the evening and two whole days with her hatchlings.
That was when disaster struck. Both to Felina and her hatchlings.
‘Look out!!!’ someone yelled, and she looked up, noticing shadows ingulfing her.
A container was falling on her. And it was inches from hitting her.
At that second, a lot of thoughts crossed Felina’s mind. But the biggest thing that came to her mind was her hatchlings. She couldn’t leave them. Not like this. Not now. Not ever.
Felina got hit by the falling container, and fell under it, with it. She finally hit the stacks of containers under her, and got crushed between the two containers.
########
Months past after the incident. Felina’s hatchlings and parents were surrounding Felina’s sleeping form. A lot of her bones were broken, and some of her organs were bleeding bad. Thankfully, all of them mended itself or got fixed through a series of surgeries, but Felina had yet to wake up. The family was still not losing hope, but it was slowly slipping out of their hands. Even the doctor said they wouldn’t know when she’ll wake up, as she got major brain damage. Sighing, Felina’s parents got up and urged the hatchlings to move. They had grown up significantly though the last few months, and were now living with their grandparents as their mother was in the bed, unable to wake up or do anything.
########
Felina opened her eyes. She thought she was in a strange place. Looking around, she found out that it was the hospital. ‘Why am I in a hospital?’ she thought, as she tried to sit up. Just as she sat up, pain blinded her, and she fell back to her bed with a small scream. Hearing that scream, a nurse came running, and told her to stay in bed, and not to move. Then she went pulled out her phone, and called someone. Soon, her parents came, with three other small hatchlings she didn’t know.
‘I didn’t know you made more hatchlings, mom.’ Felina said looking at her parents. They looked dumbstruck, but Felina ignored them, and looked at the hatchlings. ‘Hi. I’m your sister, Felina. What’s your name? And how old are you?’ This time, the hatchlings looked shocked as well. Felina misunderstood that as them being shy, and said ‘Don’t be shy. I’m your own sister! So, What’s your name?’
The hatchlings whispered to themselves, and looked at their grandparents. But their grandparents didn’t have anything to say either. The five of them looked dumbly at Felina, who looked back at them in curiosity. ‘By the way, why am I in the hospital? I don’t remember anything that was wrong, and now I have a pained back. What was wrong?’
Her parents sighed.
########
‘Mom?’ Felina’s hatchling said. It had been years after the accident, but her memory didn’t come back. But she tried to make it up to her hatchlings and parents by trying to memorize every detail. She got a new job as an electrician, a much less dangerous job. She didn’t want to make her hatchlings or parents get through what they’ve already been through again.
But it was never the same for her hatchlings or her parents.
They always felt some part of theirs’ missing.
They always missed the part of Felina that Felina didn’t know.
