It has been far to long since I've done any LOTR fanart (or much art at all, for that matter). So have a Frodo and Sam on the stairs of Cirith Ungol inspired by the song Now and For Always from the LOTR musical.
While I haven't seen the musical all the way through (you can only find the odd clip here and there) I do appreciate that they kept these scenes more true to the book. I never liked how Frodo tells Sam to go home in the movie, that was probably the very most out-of-character Frodo has ever been, and I much prefer them facing Shelob together like friends aught to do. :)

Actually Frodo did a lot of brave things in the books, and did quite a bit of combat:
He attacked the barrow-wight to save his friends, fought back against the witch-king on Weathertop, stabbed the troll (as you pointed out), was the first to attack and wound Shelob, and not to mention took the One Ring upon himself knowing full well that he likely would die to save his home.
I'm a bit defensive of Frodo, but I'm glad you like my art.

Frodo may not have done as much as the other characters in the movies, especially in regards to fighting, but I've always appreciated the burden he had to carry and how no-one else could have, and the lasting toll it took on him to do so pulls at your heartstrings (I can't speak for the books, it's been a rather long time since I've read them but as you've said he does seem to do more than in the movies). In a way Frodo was fighting the hardest battle of all throughout the entire series: the evil of the ring, and I feel like that redeems him of things he may not have done in the movies compared to the books as well as just him compared to other characters. As for the "go home" part, it may have been out of character but I feel it was necessary to show just how confused and changed Frodo had become thanks to Gollum and the ring's influence, and when Sam finds the bread that Gollum threw over the edge and decides to climb back up to save his best friend it's just another reason why Sam is one of the most amazing best friends in the history of book/movie characters and shows just how much he loves Frodo. I'm really glad when they finally unite Frodo apologizes profusely to him, though.
But anyway, I'm so glad I decided to watch you! I absolutely adore your lotr artwork and of course your other artwork as well, and this piece looks stunning! The shading is *so* good! I love Sam's floppy ears ;w;
