During the Great War, messenger dogs could be truly vital for communication in the field. In Britain, they were attached to the Royal Engineers' Signalling units; they were ultimately responsible for all types of communication, which included not only animals, but new technology like the field telephone too. These devices were connected via physical wires, which were both often cut off and dangerous to lay out. A man could easily lose his life running through no-man's land, being a big and slow target, and the wire really was of no use if it didn't reach the other end. Thus, sometimes messenger dogs would run carrying not only their written messages on their collars, but harnesses with telephone wires attached too.
Nell was often trusted with this task, of course.
Something I made a couple of weeks ago to see what Procreate + my new iPad Pro could pull off. I'm rather pleased with it and I loove having a mobile digital art tool <3
