This began as an image that popped into my head one evening and I had to draw it directly right then and there!
I have always had a passion for ancient folklore, from any side of the globe and I had been meaning to draw something Kitsune related ever since my trip to Tokyo last year. This was the outcome after checking out some photography on temples and ancient sights in Japan, right here on DA.
The Tanuki/Raccoon Dog was a secondary idea, as I wanted to involve a native animal to Japan. The Tanuki has a very strong image within Japanese folklore of a shape-shifting creature that plays mischief for kicks, so I thought they'd fit right along with this kitsune in the ancient surroundings.
Oh, those lanterns took SO LONG to make glowey.
Possibly expect more of this 'folklore' line-up, we'll see if I have the patience! XD

Ironically, I was listening to the theme from Okami when I came upon this piece, which I think would go perfectly with this picture. I've been learning a lot about Japan and its culture and people, and it makes me wish so much that I could visit the country. Incredibly well-done picture, keep up the great work.
I do enjoy the OST from 'Okami', I should try and find it sometime soon (Plus, the game is so awesome!).
