I'm not given to posting photographs, because I'm a terrible photographer and my camera is a cheap piece of junk. With that in mind, I thought I would post this image for my readers and general fans to see. This is my dog, an Australian Cattle Dog, AKA Blue Heeler, named Ruby.
My family had recently lost our Golden Retriever to cancer, and we went a couple months without a dog in the house. It was the first time in over 25 years that we didn't have a dog around. We saw an ad in the newspaper (remember those things?) offering, for 120$ each, "Blue Heeler / Australian Cattle Dog puppies" from a farm, with parents on premises. We thought the name meant they were mixed breeds, and we certainly thought that when we saw the camo-print, big-eared puppy we came away from the farm with.
Past some difficulties with our new and extremely hardheaded friend, Ruby became a beloved member of the family very quickly. I've never met a dog as intelligent or loyal as Ruby.
Fast-forward about six years, and she's gone blind from what we assume to be genetics. These dogs are predisposed to losing their vision, but we're dealing with it as best we can. She bumps into things and occasionally gets confused, but she's never alone.
The overall point is that anymore, Ruby is the only reason I get up and try to function. I feel like if she wasn't around to keep me company and bark at me for inane reasons, I would let my depression get the better of me, but Ruby helps me keep it mostly in check. In a world that doesn't care, I have a creature who I mean everything to.

When my dachshund went blind, we got a long, thin piece of plastic that was just bendy enough that, when strapped to his harness, it would bend when he hit a wall. It curled around his front just outside of his nose space and would serve as a little barrier to stop him when he would bump into things. It was so hard to see him be so scared to go around places (he became blind within a week, and deaf within a few months) so it really helped him begin to move around not as scared anymore!
Oh god, blind and deaf? Being locked-in is one of my worst fears, I couldn't imagine how a dog would cope with it. Thankfully Ruby's hearing is just fine. She seems to get around all right by nosing things, and after a few crash landings getting outside (for the longest time we had to pick her up because she was afraid of the steps), she figured out how to climb up and down using her nose to feel her way along. Dogs are smart, adaptable creatures.
*hugs* we lost our golden 3 years ago, and I still can't think about him too long without crying. I hope you're doing well, and that the new pupper is helping you stay sane. Or at least driving you a different kind of crazy.
EDIT: (reads the rest of the thing) Oh, you got Ruby years ago, didn't read that far before commenting. Still, I hope you and Ruby are doing well, and that she isn't letting a little thing like blindness stop her from driving you up a wall in the best possible way.
