Calm After the Storm—by Quinn
We finally caught up with Jean after his ecstatic running ended with him lying down next to his "calm chair". Tears ran down his face and he smiled as he stared up at the clear blue sky above. While the overly idyllic nature of Jean's "happy place" of green fields and the nature of the "calm chair" scared us before, we now understood the meaning behind the mindscape when compared to the raging storm we had experienced minutes ago. All of us save for Alistair laid down next to him, grateful for his well-being and full of a joy we hadn't felt in a long time. We did not know what got us into such a strange situation, but for the first time since starting our adventure, we had accomplished something important without outside assistance and without strange quirks of fate interfering with our goals. For the first time, we could say "We won."
This is a picture of the fifteenth in-game day of my current Pathfinder campaign with usual DM
Bomba, then-DM
MonsterMutt, and players
Serophous,
Marshtomphappy,
CaitSith and
Quinn. The party had fallen asleep in a library in an underground city abandoned centuries ago, yet it woke up in a strange landscape of rolling green hills without Jean, the party's ranged specialist. Some time spent wandering around ended with the party teleporting onto a rocky land mass amidst a raging storm, where they found Jean trapped. The party quickly came to realize that it was yet again inside a mental landscape, and so it set out to free Jean from his own mental trappings. After seven game sessions of events including regressing in age while exploring memories, being overcome by literal waves of emotion, becoming celebrities in Jean's imagined version of their future, and being hit by a bolt of lightning as an epiphany literally struck, the party manged to get Jean out of his self-imposed trap and back into the setting of peace he craved… although one party member found himself coming to realizations he wished he'd never had.
You can follow up on the latest events in the campaign as written by Lank/Gargantua here. This campaign captivates me more with every session that passes because of the intense character development that us players willingly undergo and that Bomba facilitates.
