Good morning everybody :3
It's
Ghosty writing.
And like every good cub, I like a nice warm bowl of porridge in the morning.
Sadly that grown-up shell has a normal daytime job so cooking one before I head off for work quite early is not an option (I fight for every minute that I can stay in bed).
And I am not a big fan of overnight oats, I prefer the warm variant.
To top that off ... we only got a microwave, a fridge, a hot water kettle and a coffee maker in the break room, not many options to prepare something.
Commercially available microwave porridge usually is either soooo sugar heavy or very expensive. Or both -.-
And some are just.. bleh <.< Not creamy at all.
So... I came up with an idea to pre-mix my own porridge. No added sugar. Taking some inspirations from the "3 Bears" porridge (which is nice, but 5 bucks for a 400g bag, cmon <.< )
I began experimenting with types of rolled oats so that they are ready after a few minutes, but still have a little bite.
And I think I got a nice creamy porridge now which is much cheaper and can be prepared in a batch as large as you want.
I settled for dried bananas, ground almond and poppy seeds, but basically you can throw in whatever you want.
Just top it with fresh fruit and you're ready for some warm porridge in your belly
And yeah...you can't snap a decent picture of a bowl of porridge to save your life ^.^'
Poppy Banana Porridge:
(scale it up as large as you like it)
- 5 parts thin rolled oats
- 1 part thick rolled oats
- 2 parts oatmeal powder (I just got some thin rolled oats and ground them into a powder with a mortar or food processor)
- 2 parts dried bananas (not banana chips, just dried ones), diced
- ground almond or ground nuts (as much as you like)
- poppy seeds (as much as you like, but be sparse)
- fresh fruit to your taste
- milk (normal or any vegetarian/vegan alternative. Whole milk will result in a creamier porridge)
Mix all dry ingredients together and store in a sealable container.
For a nice porridge take 1 part porridge mix, 3 parts milk and mix in a bowl.
Put into the microwave on high heat for about 1 minute. Stir, add some more milk if needed.
Microwave it for another minute, stir again and let it rest for about 2 minutes.
Stir, top with fruit and some cinnamon, add sugar if you like ... and enjoy :3
Safety advice:
Raw poppy seeds naturally contain a certain amount of morphine.
Thoroughly wash poppy seeds, then dry and toast them in the oven at about 100°C for at least 30minutes. That way you get rid of most of the morphine that is in raw poppy seeds. Washing already removes some and heat gets rid of another good deal.
Or steam them, that works as well.
But to stay on the save side, do not eat more than 20g of raw poppy seeds per day as an adult. Make sure kids eat less!
The porridge is safe to eat, as the amount of poppy seeds in the finished porridge is very small.

And good tips on the poppy seed!
If you're subject to random drug tests in your workplace, you MIGHT was skip those all together! Wuff used to get those frequently when active duty, and has seen more than one service person have to explain a positive test result due to poppy seed muffins.
