Anthro VIII
For the first time I can remember, the first time in this new body, I felt a familiar sensation; the bonding of two souls, the emotion – a human emotion. This was what I needed, understanding and that lost connection to my past life, I found it in that kiss, in that embrace with Abigale Fraustfer. It mattered not to me that she was an arctic fox hybrid, that was only a veil, a skin – for deep inside I connected with that human element.
She brought peace to me in that moment I have been searching for, and the trip to Earth did not bring. And even though our destination was fast approaching, I did not want to leave her side; I knew not if she lived on the ship or had a home on Prora-AE, all that mattered to me was that I stayed with her.
“Ready to venture to your new home?” she asked softly as she smiled brightly, holding my hand as we walked from the lab, the holographic images of this new planet clearly revealed on every monitor and screen upon the ship, like a true voyager ship.
“You…you are coming too, right?” I asked concerned, scared as though she would say otherwise.
A giggle escaped her cute lips, “Of course, why? Would you like me to hold your hand the entire way?” she teased, giving me a soft nudge with her shoulder.
My ears laid back slightly, embarrassed, but at the same time relieved, “Heh, I would, yes…”
She gave a warming smile which told me this was real, not a dream; before I had everything taken away from me, but not this time.
After a rocky and jarring entry into the atmosphere we finally landed upon the planet at one of the sanctioned docking ports. I looked at one of the smaller holographic projections of the planet as we made our way to the dock, I could see the planet was easily 10 times as massive as Earth and was predominately a liquid surface, which I had presumed had to be an ocean of water. Within the hologram I could see the ship’s location upon the very edge of a major landmass near the ocean indicated by a red blip.
“An ocean, eh? Been so long since I seen one last! Wouldn’t mind taking a walk on a beach or take a dip,” I joked.
She gave one of those little laughs that hinted at something more serious, “I…don’t think that would be a good idea…”
“Why not?”
“Our ocean is water, yes, but it’s nearly completely ammonia and Prora-AE doesn’t get warm enough to take a dip without dying in seconds…so, I wouldn’t recommend it,” she said solemnly. “if you take a dip in, you’ll be dead before help arrives, and our ‘beaches’ aren’t the best…mostly made up of alkaline metal deposits and black sedimentary deposits, though the ocean is a beautiful deep blue.”
“Not warm enough? How cold is it there?” I asked curiously, as we gathered in single file behind the crew and thousands of other passengers and scientists ready to disembark.
“Cold enough to need properly insulated clothing to keep from freezing to death,” she smiled, “put it this way, your coldest day on Earth, is our warmest…”
“so…just below freezing?”
She sniffled a giggle, “no…much colder! Our record highest temp was 20 degrees below, it was weird, the oceans began to boil! Our coldest temp was 132 degrees below…pretty much everything froze, and everybody stayed indoors and did their best to stay relatively warm”
“My god! How do you…?”
“You’ll get used to it, believe me” she smiled.
We made it through a security check before making our way into the internal port, luckily the interior of the port was well insulated and shielded from the low temperatures, but you could still feel the chill. We were handed a bag which contained thick clothing to help keep us warm along with gloves, boots, scarves and balaclavas.
We were instructed to adorn the equipment before embarking the port guarded by large doors and led to the outside. Once dressed we made our way, “Prepare yourself, it’s very cold the first time but you will get used to it,”, she warned, bundling up and snuggling close to me, “Don’t worry, my apartment complex isn’t far, we can walk the short distance.”
When the doors opened I expected the ground to be covered with snow and ice, much like a frozen tundra or arctic scenery, but it wasn’t. It was hazy, with the sunlight percolating through the clouds giving the cityscape a gloomy atmosphere. The sudden rush of bone chilling air was the only thing that caught my attention, it struck me like a freight train which immediately began to sting and burn my exposed muzzle as any moisture which clung to my fur immediately froze; forming small icicles which hung from my face. My body was aching, shivering from the cold; my fingers felt numb and my toes hurt despite the thick insulated boots I was given.
“J-J-Jesus i-it’s…c-cold!” I stuttered trying my best to brace myself, holding tight against her, “I told you…no worries though, these are only cheap insulated apparel, they have better garb for sale in the city which will help tremendously; my apartment is this way, come on,” she said pointing down a narrow street, surrounded by tall buildings of an unfamiliar architecture.
All around every building was designed so that ice and snow would not accumulate, long steep slopes and peaks dominated the skyline. It was a heavily populated area, with many pedestrians walking the streets, some were bundled up in thick clothing, huddled together to keep warm, while others were walking about undeterred and with nothing more than the fur that covered their bodies.
As we walked, I began to notice a feint fluorescent light shining from one of the dimly lit buildings, a billboard which showed the current temperature – 60 degrees below. From what she had said before, this was a relatively warm day, and those who walked about unclothed certainly had to have lived here all their life.
We passed several blocks, with no sight of any cars or vehicles of any kind. Instead, there was a rumble in the air as several small shuttles flew by overhead; they looked like planes or small ships which slowly dredged by able to navigate the narrow corridors of buildings which completely dominated the landscape.
As we walked, I began to notice the streets were littered with filth, all stuck to the ground; it was even worse in the alleyways between the buildings which were so narrow, only a small amount of light could penetrate the darkness within. A canid figure happened to catch my attention in one of the dark alleyways, sitting within a heap of trash, huddled within itself as it was staring at the ground.
“Are they…dead?” I asked pointing to the figure. “Oh…no, not dead…at least not like you’re thinking”
“What do you mean?” I asked as I followed her lead closer to the alleyway. It was then I noticed that something was wrong, the figure was mostly covered in bright white fur, dotted with black spots – a Dalmatian. Upon closer inspection, I could see obvious seams traversing its body, indicating it was more machine than organic. The metallic endoskeleton was completely exposed on one lower leg, and in a large patch upon the upper arm facing us where a bicep would be, revealing the mechanical properties which mimicked organic anatomy.
It sat there quietly, expressionless and not giving acknowledgement to our presence; it’s bright blue eyes focused upon the ground.
“It’s an android, Ray. Abandoned and discarded, so sad to see such things, but old units such as those do eventually become decommissioned and their owners discard them in the alleyways to be picked up and recycled,” she said softly shaking her head in disappointment, “it’s the cycle of all things unfortunately, and even though it’s mechanical, it is still not an easier pill to swallow, especially since they are made so lifelike.”
My mind began to wonder if those who were walking the streets bare were droids as well, and can they be trusted? After all they are only as safe as their programming and like all things computerized, susceptible to errors.
A thought soon crossed my mind as I stared at this inorganic machine; it is itself a hybrid, like me…but machine and creature, a hollow shell of it’s true nature. I began to feel sympathy for the thing, finding the emotional connection as I pondered if it at one time felt the same way as I did. Could it have been self-aware? And if so, how did it feel knowing it was merely an imitation of life?
I simply stared at it – so lonely, cold and lifeless. I began to count my blessings, there were far worse things to become, and a far less fortunate fate to have. It was Abigale’s warm soft voice which broke my trance, saying to “Come on”.
I couldn’t help but look back over my shoulder as I made my way to follow her back to the narrow streets; that lifeless figure sitting still in the cold, dark alleyway will forever haunt my dreams.

My submission for this week's
Thursday_Prompt and the continuation of my story of Ray, the hybrid wolf who woke up from Cryogenic Freezing 300 years into the future. It was now the time they landed on their new home a distant planet far away from Earth.
Wanted to keep to the same length/rhythm as the previous stories, but still develop a brand new world which is very difficult to do without writing a book! So i kept it short and simple, with a few details which I will develop more insight to the planet and it's features as well as Ray's new home.
This week's prompt wasn't centered around a specific keyword, instead it was around this art piece here from

And I think it fit in nicely with the sci-fi theme as well as the general nature of the planet being cold and gloomy.
Hope you guys enjoy ^^ And as always, feedback and critique is appreciated!
