Never had a cold sore but I get ingrown hairs on the lipline and it hurts to pop them!
As for the irritated taste bud, dude I just grit my teeth and get some toenails clippers and cut it off. Usually if their at the tip of my tongue, I can bite it off.

I do the same thing as the above poster; I usually bite those infected taste buds off. It's like 2 seconds of crazy pain biting at it and then relief! Sorry little dude, that smiling face has gotta go, haha.
