I grew up with the show as well. My local PBS affiliate (WGBH-2) was still rerunning the episodes from the 80s as late as 1999!
Regarding the model town seen in the opening and closing credits, I recognized a few of the structures since I am into model railroading: Mister Rogers's house is an HO-scale Bachmann Plasticville "Cape Cod House!"

SCIENCE FACT: Koko the gorilla was a fan of Mister Rogers and he actually visited her.
