The characteristic traits of the family is the stretched skin between their limbs which allows them to glide from tree to tree.
P. parvicauda is the largest member of the family and the only one that hunts on the ground. It has a short, almost non-existent tail, a large head, and long limbs. Although it hunts on the ground, it still nests in trees and can glide.
It is a hypocarnivore. It eats fruit, fungus, small birds, and rodents.
The genus Pterocyon is found throughout the Amazon rainforest.
