PAL's are a concept i came up with a while back,

PAL's stands for Portable Artificial Lifeforms,
basically in the future stemcell research reaches a point where a toy company starts making a new bio-toy called PAL, a toy lifeform that reads a childs mind and can grow and react to needs and wants, But since the introduction 10 years ago, pals found new uses since their growth and powers are limited to their owners mental strength, basically stronger you are mentally the stronger your PAL can be

part of the concept included a "power-up" idea, where in a fight, or emergency when the owner is concentrating hard, new parts like wings can grow onto the pall temporarally
