They didn’t understand him.
To them, he was a beast to be tamed; a monster to be subdued; a man with no end, and with no way to stop. He was feared more than he was respected, and the blood on his hands stained to the bone.
War was his only solace, the only thing that could temper his wild heart. He was as real as any god casting the Long Shadow, as real as the icy cold touch of Death on those deemed fit for it. In his way, he was Death. He wore it around him like a cloak, protecting him from accusing fingers and blighted words. They blew through him like so many winter winds, with his soul insulated from their wholly deserved judgment.
But in some places, even Death died. The cloak would be shed, and underneath, he was just a man. Naked, wanting, exposed. In those places, he could express his fear of seeing everything around him wither in the cold. He could lament the earth he salted with his footsteps. He could long for life to find him, instead of blood and viscera.
The Maiden sought out Death in those places, where he was most vulnerable. She hunted him until he was cornered, and there she found not the phantom that haunted those who crossed his path, but only the man. The man who craved life, tenderness, attention. The man who wanted love and life and freedom above all, and fought with heated breath for it all. She found the man that cried, that hurt himself over and over again so that others would not have to.
She found the soul underneath the cloaked man, and she understood what they could not. The Maiden let that knowledge sink into her bones like the blood that stained his, and she knew she had asked too much of him. As had they.
And when she understood, she fell in love. She wiped away his tears without fear of the icy touch of Death. She stroked his skin tenderly without fear of a beast rearing its jaws at her. She kissed away the torment that battled in his soul, and it lifted the cloak from him forever.
For under the Maiden’s kiss, even Death could melt.
