This time I tried bouncing the flash off the ceiling. It does light up more of Sense, but makes the black fur not so black. Not sure what to think.

Yeah that's what I thought. I agree! She did a very nice job on her second fursuit. I helped with the balaclava a little with getting it started but she pretty much did everything else ^_^. We're up for commissions though! We've done work with fursuits before, but moreso her.
They're all posted on my most recent journal on my page or
werewolfsense's page. Feel free to have a look! =D

werewolfsense did pretty much all of the work! I just helped with the starting of the jaw and cutting of the fabric for her body suit ^__^. We're open for commissions though! It's all on my most recent journal or on her page too. Feel free to have a look!

Bouncing the flash is almost always the best way to go in my opinion. The only time that it isn't really necessary is if you're using fill-flash while shooting in bright daylight, or if bouncing just simply isn't an option. Direct flash almost always leaves harsh shadows unless you're using a big softbox.
For this particular pic, it just looks like the flash may have been bounced in the wrong spot (looks like it was almost directly above the head). Aim it behind you some if you can, so it's a larger area of light that's not at such an extreme angle to the subject.

Yeah I tend to like using bounce flash when possible. It's usually good for portraits for people, but with furries I think it's different. My goal is to take a picture of what exactly the fursuit looks like in terms of colors. This one kinda does that, but makes the black on top look kind of gray, and that's what I don't want to do. I'm still getting used to the different settings on my camera and flash, but I did forget there's a setting for "fill-flash". Too bad it's not literally called "fill-flash" because that would make it SOOO much easier XD. Thanks for the tips though! I've got much more experimenting to do. Perhaps I'll buy my Gary Fong diffuser for this flash as I once had for my SB-600.
The Gary Fong diffuser is nice, but I think the Demb Flash Diffuser is even better. It's what I use for nearly every picture I take that I use flash on. (http://www.dembflashproducts.com/diffuser/)
What I love about it is I can control how much of the flash I want to use as fill light, and how much I want to bounce off the wall or ceiling. It feels a bit strange to use at first, but now that I got the hang of it, I just can't live without it. It uses your flash power much more efficiently than a Fong diffuser, but you may not need to worry about efficiency as much with an SB-900 :P
I still really recommend you give it a look. My FA page and Flickr page are completely full of shots where I've used it if you're wanting example pictures.

Quite an interesting diffuser there. Thanks for the link! I saw a few pictures from your gallery and I must say I love the lighting with them! None of the fursuits look too bright and there's no harsh dark spots anywhere. I'm amazed you're able to take a picture with fill-flash at 1/30. I'm still trying to do it decently at that speed, but whenever I look at the picture up close, it's just a tiiiny bit blurry so it makes the picture not as sharp as it's supposed to be. I sometimes use VR at those speeds, but with my two portrait lenses (50mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.4) they don't have VR XD.
Eh trust me, a lot of mine end up blurry too :P You can see examples of such on my flickr page for AC 09, especially during the fursuit parade. I ended up changing from 1/30 to 1/60 and finally 1/125th, because the parade was just moving so fast and I had split seconds to compose pictures. Didn't really have enough time to make sure every shot was rock-steady. Not to mention that just the movement of the suiters walking would cause pictures to come out blurry too.
I'm glad you like the pictures so much. :) I'm no pro yet myself, but I'm getting things figured out. :P
My actual camera gear is pretty modest. I rented a Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8 lens for AC. The only lenses I actually own are the Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (the one that came with my old D40), and the Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6. Normally those two lenses work fine for me as far as just taking pictures for fun, but whenever I've got some big event like AC, I make sure I rent something a bit more serious, since I can't really justify spending 1,200 dollars on a lens when I make no money from photography at all. :P

Ah I had a feeling the lens would be a pretty good lens based on the photos you were taking. Can't get that kind of bokeh with a stock lens most of the time X3. I want to try to get something like that for my D700, but for the most part, the stock 24-120mm f3.5-5.6 does a pretty decent job. When I want those really good portrait shots (and I have the room), I'll swap out for the 50mm or 85mm. When I really want to use something like that inside, the best I can cope with is the 50mm because the 85mm leaves just enough room for the head lol, and I don't have time to say "ok wait here a sec" ::move back a few spaces:: "oh hey guys, wait a sec, I just gatta take this picture" ::click::. No way do I have that kind of time, nor would con goers have that kind of patience for me lol. Also, because my camera is FX and not DX, I can't really use any DX lenses or else it'll only go to 5mp. So any lens that I want, I have to make sure its an FX lens which always costs more than a DX lens lol. Oh well, it has its advantages and disadvantages I guess XD.
