Me too. That whole fear has kept me from watching so many shows and playing so many games. Heck, with the show... errr...
SPOILER ALERT!!!
...Final Space, I knew about the second they brought Avocato on that they would eventually kill him off. And if episode previews are anything to go by, they absolutely did. I'm worried they'll do the same with Little Cato, too. (Or even worse.)

yeah...avocato is dead.....what a shock..... and digimon tri killed leomon forever, he never came back in rthe final episode, and was not evn implied he did, so, yeah, no more leomon.....frankly, i just dont wanna watch "serious" anime or media with anthros, lazy writers and directors like ammoru hosoda think theyu are adult and mature by killing off characters, insted of developing them....and honestly, i am tired of that trope.
Sadly, in Avocato's case, he felt underdeveloped. His personality was generic, his backstory was generic, and I'm kind of hoping they do better with Little Cato, but I don't expect it.
I'm almost tempted to write a book on this very trope and call Marked for Death. The main hero is going to be an anthro in a a group of humans who constantly has to avoid dying, and unfortunately for him, he's put in more situations where his life is on the line than his friends.

lol, sounds liek a good idea
and yeah, it is s trope, a tool for lazy writers, is that simple. you are not a better writer for killing off a character to get a dramatic moment nobody will remember the next episode. you are a good writer, when you give your characters the chance to grow and develope...but......we dont have musch of that anymore.
i made a journal about it on my gallery, you are welcome to check it out.
and again, at least, we have akira toriyama giving a damn about all of his creations in dragon ball super.

oolong, giran, captain yellow. there are many anthors in dragon ball that started as villains and became good guys. and were resurrected. the thing is, in dragon ball, no anthro character is wasted, if they are bad, as cymbal. well....they had it coming, and that is the thing, an anthro villain, is a different story. if the character is redeemable, cool, but, if not, yeah...it must die. i always use don bluth movies as example. his villains, are uber evil, and when they die, you know they had it coming. the best example is the secret of nimh. that dagger in the back, thrown by sullivan with hjis literal last breath. epic villain defeat. again, is not if they die or not, is if it is worth to the story and respectful to the character. and yes, ALL CHARACTERS DESERVE RESPECT, because all characters, have followers.
