The commissioner provides me with information and visual reference and then I look up a bunch of similar but not the same things to get a good range of concepts that all work together. I looked at old bolt-action rifles, newer tactical shotguns and different types of stocks amidst many other random objects, but ended up going with something fairly similar to the original for the 3 designs I sent the commissioner. The commissioner had a character that uses the gun and an image with the character holding it that set the mood (sort of a Terminator vibe (incidentally this is the same gun that the original Terminator used)).
