This story is actually quite old. After taking it out and dusting it off with a quick edit, I found I was still in love with it - therefore, I take great pleasure in presenting it to you.
It is 35 pages long, but I think you will agree they move very quickly.
This is actually all a part of a project I'm working on which I will explain more about later. For now it's just enough to enjoy a truly happy ending...
enjoy...

So I might have been tempting fate when I said I would have this read and feedback given by the end of last night.
That said, I found this story to be quite masterfully told.
The characters and dialogue are top form, the humour is well done and there is some nice tension in the fight scenes and Fred's (seemingly) last stand at the end. Moreover, I was misjudged this story at first, thinking it was going to be a slice of life tale with a few Buck Rogers reference; so the throwback to the classic space opera took me by surprise (to be fair, I should have taken the fact that you wrote this as a hint of what was coming *chuckes*)
I was watching for errors but I wasn't able to find any, at least not in this sitting.
Speaking of Buck Rogers, I made the decision to have the theme song from the 1970s TV series ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xM0p9VHeoyA ) playing in the background as I read; it could not have fit better.

I just got my internet back after the utility company "accidentally" cut everything off because they lost my identification information and thought I was stealing utilities, though my bills were being paid. Go figure. Had to wait all weekend to get things turned on.
Loved the story. I really need to have a talk with you about doing a book.

Oh yeah. That was as much fun as I could have asked for and more! I can really appreciate the 'normal guy gets pulled into fantastic outer space adventure' since that's the only way I could ever see myself in those circumstances. I'm thrilled to hear this is part of a larger project - I can't wait to see what else you have up your sleeve.
To infinity, and beyond!
