"You should really pay us... for your own safety and protection."
"Protection from what?"
"From what we are going to do to you if you don't pay."

Remember to stay away from lizard mafia, kids! They are dangerous! :P
This scene doesn't depict any characters in particular, it's just a "slice of life" scenario, something that happend quite often in my setting. Since the human invasion non-humans have been forbidden from owning businesses, and they can only find a job if employed (with the exception of dwarves, because the Dwarven Syndacate is extremely rich and powerful, and the little guys look human enough).
However, in the slums the situation is a bit different. The guards keep both their eyes closed, as long as the "Kings of Beggars" keep the non-human population and criminality in check, and enjoy part of the profits. This ensures that all kinds of illegal activities happen in the slums, including non-humans owning shops and other kinds of business.
Of course things are not easy in the slums. Everyone there must pay "protection money" to the gang leaders, and considering there's always been a lot of tension between the Ajshar (felines) and Sa'jiir (lizards) it's most likely the poor guy above got an extra tax to pay just for belonging to the "wrong" species. He'll be fine, though, as long as he pays up....

Sweet shop? No. Maybe food or an apothecary? In the slums, maybe a little bit of all three?
I love the level of detail you put into your work. Its a visual treat to scour this image, looking at all bibs and bobs that contribute nothing on their own, but complete the scene as part of a larger whole. So very worth the effort, thank you for that.
Also, I'm wearing the same anklet as the merchant. although my "claws" aren't nearly as sharp. Nice added detail!

As always, I absolutely adore your stories! I really don't know what else to say, they are amazing, and always a joy to read! ^^ This makesme feel bad for drawing this scene, it's heartbreaking! I'm glad that poor merchant managed to find a deal with the lizard, hopefully in time their situation will improve.
Again, thank you SO much for writing this! It really means a lot! ^^

Indeed, the poor guy is trying to integrate! ^^
At first it was not the case, but as time went on humans became the majority in this region too (after 70+ years of immigration and population growth), and isolated the other species in ghettos and slums. At this point humans simply decided to put their hands on all profitable businesses, allowing non-humans to work only as employees.
(this doesn't happen in all regions, though, since this continent was colonized by several human kingdoms, each with different laws).

well-done slice of life scene, the emotions are palpable. I wanna rush to help but it would be useless... unless I rush to kill every gang member, and then their neighbours, because they would fill the void right away, etc... it would be useless. it needs more to change things.
and the empire isn't interested. keeping the enemies small and busy with themselves, and rake in some money on the side. inofficially, of course. but hey, penuncia non olet, sic?

It appears that it means: "Karim's spices"

You are a marvel with scenery and atmosphere. If you ever do commission work, I have had a epic fantasy in the works for over 15 years, and I would love to hire your skills some day.
That being said, with this, well as fun as I find it can be to lean on and intimidate people... I am not terribly fond of things like this.
I think some people may deserve to be threatened, extorted, intimidated and abused, but when you see a family man like this, it's, really not easy, at all. He could be a good person, trying hard to do the best for his family by ANY means, or he could be a deadbeat dad and a fiend of a crook... Or not. Hell, Mr scaly skins here might be the same way. Could have a woman and little ones to support and he ignores his conscience, and extorts money from the weak and beats down any "Tough guys" that give his employers lip... Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but there is a LOT to read into in your art.

Sorry it's taking me a while to reply to all your messages, I'm quite busy these days. I'll get there eventually! XD
Thank you so much, I'm honored you think so! I wanted to start doing commissions, but the amount of bureaucracy involved to do it safely is terrible, and that is the only reason why I'm not doing them right now. And then I'd have to decide all the prices and such, it won't be easy!
Yep, I think the poor cat here doesn't deserve it in the slightest! He's just a merchant trying to do his job and provide for his family. Mr Scaly could also have a family, who knows!

Nonsense, there is no need to rush. While I very much enjoy reading your replies, you don't need to answer me immediately, I don't expect or demand anybody to reply to me. So no need to worry at all about taking your time. ^^
I'd be happy to help you figure out some commission details, such as pricing.
I thought so, but then again, getting involved in this line of "Work" usually demands selling your soul and conscience.
